The present invention provides a method and apparatus for separating a media item from a bunch of media items. The apparatus comprises at least one first roller located on a first side of a transport path along which a media item is transported and at least two further rollers located on a further side of the transport path opposite the first side, said at least two further rollers being spaced apart to receive a portion of said at least one first roller therebetween, wherein in an advance mode of operation said first and further rollers rotate in the same direction and in a reject mode of operation said first and further rollers rotate in opposite directions.

Media item separation

A method and apparatus are disclosed for guiding an item of media travelling along a pre-determined transport pathway. The apparatus includes a guide body comprising an arcuate guide surface, at least one drive roller comprising an outer drive surface, and at least one pulley member having an outer item engaging surface that extends through an opening in the guide surface and is urged against the outer drive surface. The drive roller and pulley member co-operate to lift an item away from the guide surface at an arcuate region of the transport pathway.

Guiding pathway

A bunch sheet depository is described. The depository comprises: a pressure plate for pressing on a bunch of sheets; a picker aligned with the pressure plate and arranged to remove sheets individually from the bunch of sheets; a link arm including (i) a pivot, (ii) an urging portion coupled to the pressure plate and (iii) a resilient member; and an actuator coupled to the resilient member. The actuator is operable, when actuated, to move the resilient member to rotate the link arm about the pivot and thereby cause compression of the bunch of sheets by the pressure plate using a force from the resilient member that reduces as the resilient member relaxes in response to the pressure plate moving as sheets are removed from the bunch of sheets.

Media depository

A check processing module (CPM) is provided for a self-service check depositing terminal. The CPM comprises a substantially U-shaped plastic guide including (i) first and second leg portions forming the substantially U-shape, (ii) a surface which forms an opening in the first leg portion, and (ii) a releasing member which is disposed on the second leg portion. The CPM further comprises a shaft assembly including (i) a plastic shaft having opposite end portions and a central portion between the opposite end portions, (ii) a number of drive rollers disposed on the central portion, (iii) a first plastic race bearing attached to one end portion of the plastic shaft and disposed in the opening of the plastic guide, and (iv) a second plastic race bearing attached to the other end portion of the plastic shaft and secured by the releasing member to the plastic guide. The releasing member is operable to secure the shaft assembly to the plastic guide during operation of the CPM, and is operable to release the shaft assembly from the plastic guide during disassembly of parts of the CPM.

A variable pressure document infeed transport provides a first driving pressure on a document being transported in a first direction along a document transport path of a self-service terminal, and provides a second driving pressure which is greater than the first driving pressure on a document being transported in a second direction which is opposite the first direction along the document transport path of the self-service terminal. The first driving pressure means may be provided by a first plurality of idlers centered along the document transport path, and the second driving pressure means may be provided by a second plurality of idlers off-centered along the document transport path.

A document drive apparatus has an upstream end, a downstream end, and a document feeding line defined between the ends. The apparatus directs a document around a corner. The apparatus includes a drive drum having a central axis and rotatably mounted on a base member for rotation about its central axis. An endless drive belt is disposed on a pivot support and first and second arm members having one end thereof connected to the pivot support. The belt and the drum cooperate to define at least a portion of the feeding line defined between the upstream and downstream ends. At least one of the first and second arm members is pivotable about its end connected to the pivot support towards and away from the drum such that (i) a certain amount of the belt presses against the drive drum when the arm member is pivoted towards the drum to enable the document to be directed around the corner, and (ii) less than the certain amount of the belt presses against the drum when the arm member is pivoted away from the drum to enable a jammed document to be more easily removed from the document feeding line. The first and second arm members form an L-shape about the pivot support when the one arm is pivoted towards the drum. A snap mechanism holds an arm member in a locked position when the arm member is pivoted towards the drum. The snap mechanism is operable to allow the arm member to be pivoted about the pivot support away from the locked position to an unlocked position away from the drum.

A moveable member which is moveable between first and second positions relative to an optical axis of an imaging camera is used to calibrate the camera. The moveable member has a first reference member positioned at the optical axis when the moveable member is in the first position, and has a second reference member positioned at the optical axis when the moveable member is in the second position. A preferred embodiment has a first calibration device for a front camera and a second calibration for a rear camera when both the front and the rear of the document are to be imaged. A single actuator is used to simultaneously move both moveable members of the first and second calibration devices between the positions mentioned.

A sheet feeding apparatus includes a retard mechanism to prevent the inadvertent feeding of doubled or overlapped sheets. The retard mechanism includes a plurality of belts in an assembly positioned adjacent to a sheet feeding roller, and rotating in such a direction as to retard the sheets being fed. The retard assembly is mounted on the free end of a lever arm pivotally secured adjacent to its other end to the base of the sheet feeding apparatus. The lever arm with the retard assembly mounted thereon is spring-urged toward the feed roller, but may be moved slightly away from said roller to accommodate the thickness of the sheet being fed between the feed roller and the retard assembly. A dual spring arrangement contained in the lever arm permits the lever arm to move with relatively little force to accommodate passage of a single sheet, but to resist more vigorously any additional movement, such as would be required for the passage of double or overlapped sheets. A one-way retaining device permits movement of the lever arm and retard assembly toward the feed rollers as the roller and belts wear, but prevents movement away from said roller except for the limited movement permitted to accommodate sheets during feeding. The retaining device may be released to permit the lever arm and retard assembly to be swung away from the feed roller for replacement of the feed roller and retard belts when worn.

Apparatus for driving sheets comprises a track assembly, a first plurality of drive rollers and a cooperating set of back-up rollers for transporting sheets in a first direction along the track assembly, a second plurality of drive rollers and a cooperating set of back-up rollers for driving said sheets in a second direction with respect to the track assembly, into proper position to cause them to be transported by said first plurality of drive rollers and cooperating back-up rollers, and solenoid-operated actuating mechanism for simultaneously operating both sets of back-up rollers to cause one set of back-up rollers to be moved into operative position when the other set of back-up rollers is moved out of operative position.
