A conductor termination system for use with an electrical power transmission conductor includes a termination assembly and a connector. The termination assembly includes an end member and an integral retainer mechanism. The end member includes a receiver portion configured to receive a segment of the conductor. The retainer mechanism includes a moveable keeper member on the end member. The retainer mechanism is operable to selectively clamp a segment of the conductor in the receiver portion to the end member and to apply a retention load to the conductor segment. The connector is adapted to be applied to the end member and the conductor to securely clamp the conductor segment to the end member.

Cable termination systems and isolating apparatus for electrical power transmission conductors and methods using the same

A transverse wedge connector system for forming an electrical connection with first and second elongate electrical conductors includes an electrically conductive first connector member, an electrically conductive second connector member, an insert member, and a clamping mechanism. The first connector member includes a first body having a first channel portion and a first abutment portion. The first channel portion defines a first channel to receive the first conductor. The second connector member includes a second body having a second channel portion and a second abutment portion. The second channel portion defines a second channel to receive the second conductor. The insert member is configured to be selectively mounted in the first channel and defining an insert member channel to receive the first conductor when the insert member is mounted in the first channel. The clamping mechanism is selectively operable to displace the first and second connector members relative to one another from an open position to a closed position to clamp the first conductor between the first channel portion and the second abutment surface, and to clamp the second conductor between the second channel portion and the first abutment portion to thereby form a connection.

Customizable power utility connectors and methods and connections including same

An electrical cable includes a core having a conductor, insulation surrounding the conductor, and an outer sheath surrounding the core. A portion of the conductor is stripped bare at a free end and a cavity is formed within the insulation at the cable free end. First and second shims are concentrically secured to the exposed portion of the conductor such that end portions of the shims are positioned adjacent to the cavity. The bare conductor is secured within a barrel portion of a terminal lug. A first sealing mastic material is disposed within the cavity and heated to encapsulate end portions of the shims. A second sealing mastic material is applied around the lug barrel portion, first and second shims, and a portion of the outer sheath. A heat shrinkable tube having an inner surface of zinc oxide stress control mastic material is secured around the second sealing mastic material.

Isolating apparatus for electric power lines and methods for forming and using the same

An electrical connector assembly includes a first conductive member and a second conductive member. The first conductive member includes a first channel portion extending from a first wedge portion, with the first channel portion configured to receive a first conductor therein. The first conductive member includes a jaw movably coupled to the first channel portion and being positioned between the first channel portion and the first wedge portion. The second conductive member includes a second channel portion extending from a second wedge portion where the second channel portion configured to receive a second conductor. The first wedge portion and the second wedge portion are assembled such that the second wedge portion engages the jaw and moves the jaw to the closed position. The jaw engages the first conductor in the closed position. Optionally, the first channel portion may have a contoured shape.

Transverse wedge connector

A tool for securing a connector on a conductor using an explosive charge includes a first tool member, a second tool member, a drive member, a lock member and a limiting member. The second tool member is movably mounted on the first tool member. A breech chamber is defined in at least one of the first and second tool members. The breech chamber is adapted to receive the explosive charge. A breech opening is defined in at least one of the first and second tool members. The breech opening communicates with the breech chamber. The tool is adapted to forcibly move the drive member responsive to an explosion of the explosive charge in the breech chamber. The second tool member is movable between a closed position, wherein the breech opening is closed, and an open position, wherein the breech opening is open to allow loading and unloading of the explosive charge into and from the breech chamber, by moving the second tool member relative to the first tool member. The lock member is selectively movable between a locked position, wherein the lock member prevents the second tool member from moving relative to the first tool member from the closed position to the open position, and an unlocked position, wherein the lock member permits the second tool member to move relative to the first tool member from the closed position to the open position. The limiting member is selectively movable between a first position, wherein the limiting member prevents movement of the lock member from the locked position to the unlocked position, and a second position, wherein the limiting member permits the lock member to move from the locked position to the unlocked position.

Tools for securing connectors using explosive charges and methods for using the same

A tool for securing a connector on a conductor using an explosive charge includes a first tool member and a second tool member movably mounted on the first tool member. A breech chamber is defined in at least one of the first and second tool members. The breech chamber is adapted to receive the explosive charge. A breech opening is defined in at least one of the first and second tool members and communicates with the breech chamber. A drive member is provided. The tool is adapted to forcibly move the drive member responsive to an explosion of the explosive charge in the breech chamber. The second tool member is movable between a closed position, wherein the breech opening is closed, and an open position, wherein the breech opening is open to allow loading and unloading of the explosive charge into and from the breech chamber, by sliding the second tool member relative to the first tool member along a slide axis and additionally pivoting the second tool member relative to the first tool member about a pivot axis transverse to the slide axis.
