A continuous granulator comprises a longitudinal granulation chamber having a first end with an inlet for powder material and a binder feed port and a second end with an outlet for granulated product. The granulation chamber comprises at least two parallel rotary shafts provided with granulating elements and forming an angle of from 0 to 70 degrees with the vertical. Each granulating element on a shaft comprises at least one lobe having limited extent in the circumferential direction of the shaft and interleaving with a lobe of a granulating element on another shaft. A plurality of such separate granulating elements are distributed from the inlet to the outlet, and successive granulating elements on a shaft are mutually angled.

In a spray drying process utilizing a spray dryer having internal gas filters and an internal fluidized bed and comprising an after-treatment of the product in a separate unit outside the spray drying chamber, which treatment produces a particle-loaded gas stream, said particle-loaded gas stream is conducted from the separate unit to the spray drying chamber. The stream passes, together with the spent drying gas in the drying chamber, the filters integrated in said chamber. Several plant modifications are suggested for performing the process which involves substantial savings by making external particle collectors superfluous.

A filter unit for filtering gas has at least one filter element with an outlet opening. A filter cleaning nozzle is located in a clean-gas chamber at a distance from the outlet opening and is connected to a source of pressurized primary cleaning gas via a control valve. Primary cleaning gas is ejected from an annular slot and along the outer side of a guide body located in the clean-gas chamber. The guide body is open to the secondary gas in the chamber.

Spray drying is performed at increased pressure whereby advantages are obtained as to product characteristics and production capacity. Particulate materials of an amorphous structure and non-dusting high-bulk density powders can be obtained.

In an apparatus for drying a moist material in a stream of drying gas the residence time is increased by inserting one or more perforated plates, above which fluidized particle layers are created, and through which a portion of the drying gas and material to be dried are passed, whereas the remaining part of the drying gas and material is by-passed said perforated plates. Improved drying capacity, heat economy and operational flexibility and decreased risk for heat damage of the material to be dried are obtained.

An apparatus for processing a particulate material containing an inflammable component, such as ethanol or another solvent, comprises a fluidized bed chamber with a perforated bed plate arranged therein. The particulate material may be fluidized on the bed plate by supplying fluidizing air upwardly through perforations in the bed plate. In order to reduce the risk of explosion in the fluidizing air after its passage through the fluidized bed formed on the bed plate, dilution gas is fed into the fluidized bed chamber. The dilution gas is introduced into the fluidized bed chamber at least at one position spaced from the side walls of the chamber and preferably located centrally within the fluidized bed chamber in order to obtain a substantially uniform mixing of the dilution gas with the fluidizing air including the inflammable component immediately above the fluidized bed. The explosion safe gas mixture may be discharged from the upper part of the processing chamber.
