An aggregation volume includes a plurality of sub-volumes. Advanced storage functions or operations are carried out at the aggregation volume granularity and therefore are carried out on all sub-volumes allocated in a single aggregation volume at the same time. Such organization results in a de facto consistency group for all sub-volumes associated with a single aggregation volume. To create a sub-volume the aggregation volume is logically divided into pre-defined size chunks. Each chuck can subsequently be allocated to the sub-volume. When a sub-volume is created it is allocated to a number of chunks according to a requested sub-volume size.

A mechanism is provided in a data processing system comprising a processor and a memory, the memory comprising instructions that are executed by the processor to specifically configure the processor to implement an initiator entity in a symmetric split-direction connection. The initiator entity generates a custom keepalive command and sends the custom keepalive command to a target entity via the symmetric split-direction connection. Responsive to the initiator entity determining a number of consecutive acknowledgement commands received in response to custom keepalive commands exceed a first threshold, the initiator entity reports the symmetric split-direction connection as sufficient. Responsive to the initiator entity determining a second number of consecutive keepalive commands sent without receiving an acknowledgement is greater than a second threshold, the initiator entity reports the symmetric split-direction connection as insufficient.

The method includes the steps of deeming certain activities which involve interactions between a user and a data communication system to be less important than other activities, and introducing a degradation in response time for the interactions belonging to the certain activities deemed less important compared to a response time for the interactions belonging to the other activities.

Strategic modifications in traffic shaping, load balancing or the like are associated with the managing of aspects or characteristics of the transfer of data communications in a network environment. The present system is directed to changing the way humans interact with data communications technologies; and circumstantially to effecting modifications in those automated portions of data communications systems which are sensitive to response time metrics. This changing is accomplished through the introduction of selective increasing of delay in response time which serves to pedagogically discourage human users of data communications systems from economically disadvantageous interactions.
