A vehicle seat, comprising an upholstered seat surface and an upholstered backrest, whereby the backrest may be folded forward about a first horizontal pivoting axis. A backrest element is integrated close to the front side of the upholstered backrest, which may be pivoted in the backrest about a second horizontal pivoting axis, which, in side view, is higher than the first horizontal pivoting axis. The backrest element is curved in the region of the second horizontal pivoting axis, such that an upper backrest piece is formed above the second horizontal pivoting axis and a lower backrest piece is formed below the second horizontal pivoting axis, which are inclined towards each other in the direction of the front side of the backrest. A mid upper area of the upper backrest piece lying in the lateral direction of the backrest and a mid lower area of the lower backrest piece lying in the lateral direction of the backrest, have a greater elasticity than the rest of the backrest element, or both said areas may be arched backwards.

A portable backrest structure includes a base section adjustably fitted onto a piece of seating furniture, and an upright section for elevating a pivot axis above a seat part of the furniture. The backrest structure is easily movable to and installed on another piece of furniture.

In a chair having a pivoting backrest, displacement of a seated person's clothing is minimized by yieldably mounting a pivot axis for the backrest so that the pivot axis is lowered in elevation as the person's back leans against the backrest.

A backrest for a seat includes an upper back portion having an integral, central extension, a lower back portion having a central cut-out, and hinges for pivotally connecting the upper and lower back portions together to permit free swinging movement of the extension through the cut-out about a pivot axis situated at a level above the extension so that substantially the entire extension can come out of the cut-out in a reclined position of the upper back portion to support the lower back of the seat occupant. The extension may be provided with a central recess separating two lateral prongs from one another, and an elastic band may then be used to span the recess between the prongs.

Backrest for a seat arrangement

An article of seating furniture includes a support structure that has oppositely facing major surfaces and a circumferential edge portion extending between the major surfaces. A cover is provided for the support structure, such cover including two major portions each juxtaposed with one of the major surfaces of the support structure and a continuous band juxtaposed with the edge portion of the support structure mid connected along respective seams with each of the two major portions of the cover. The band is visually distinguishable from the remainder of the covers, such as by being provided with visually distinguishable symbols distributed along its length.

A covered wall unit, especially suitable for use in office furniture applications, includes an upright structure having an outer, peripheral, open channel loosely surrounded by a tubular-shaped flexible cover. A tension bar is received in the channel for pushing the cover therein and tensioning the cover to lie taut against the structure.
