A method is disclosed. The method includes switching off a power transistor circuit in an electronic circuit. The electronic circuit includes a power source and a load circuit. The power transistor circuit is connected between the power source and the load circuit. Switching off the power transistor circuit includes operating at least one power transistor included in the power transistor circuit in an Avalanche mode so that at least a portion of energy stored in the electronic circuit before switching off the power transistor circuit is dissipated in the at least one power transistor.

Method for operating a power transistor circuit

An apparatus comprises: first windings, second windings, a magnetic core, and multiple tap nodes. The first windings are primary windings of a multi-tapped autotransformer. The second windings are secondary windings of the multi-tapped autotransformer. The first windings and the second windings are wrapped around the magnetic core, the second windings disposed in a series connection between the first windings. The multiple tap nodes providing coupling of the first windings and the second windings to a power supply circuit such as a switched-capacitor converter.

According to one configuration, an inductor device comprises core material and at least a first electrically conductive path. The core material is fabricated from magnetically permeable material. The first electrically conductive path extends axially through the core material from a proximal end of the inductor device to a distal end of the inductor device. The core material is operable to confine first magnetic flux generated from first current flowing through the first electrically conductive path. The inductor device further includes a gap in the core material. The gap (gas or solid material) has a different magnetic permeability than the core material. Inclusion of the gap in the core material provides a way to tune an inductance of the inductor device and increase a magnetic saturation level of the inductor device. The core material includes any number of electrically conductive paths and corresponding gaps.

Inductor devices and stacked power supply topologies

A power supply system comprises: a switched-capacitor converter, a transformer, and a voltage converter. The switched-capacitor converter includes multiple capacitors. The multiple capacitors are controllably switched in a circuit path including a primary winding of the transformer to convert the first voltage into a second voltage. The voltage converter converts the first voltage produced by the switched-capacitor converter into the second voltage that powers a load.

Hybrid switched-capacitor converter

A power supply system comprises: a switched-capacitor converter, a multi-tapped autotransformer, and an output stage. The multi-tapped autotransformer includes multiple primary windings. The switched-capacitor converter includes multiple circuit paths coupled to the primary windings. For example, a first circuit path includes a first capacitor; a second circuit path includes a second capacitor. The power supply further includes a controller that controllably switches an input voltage to the first circuit path and the second circuit path, conveying energy to the primary windings of the multi-tapped autotransformer. The output stage of the power supply is coupled to receive energy from a combination of the first primary winding and the second primary winding of the multi-tapped autotransformer. Via the received energy, the output stage produces an output voltage that powers a load.

Switched-capacitor converter with multi-tapped autotransformer

Circuits and methods are provided for soft-starting a switched-capacitor converter (SCC), so as to limit inrush current at the start-up of the SCC. This is accomplished by using the first power switch of the SCC, i.e., the switch coupled to the input of the SCC, to reduce the voltage provided at the SCC input, such that the full input voltage is not directly applied to the SCC circuitry downstream from the first power switch during the SCC start-up. The reduced voltage provided to the SCC circuitry (other than the first power switch) serves to limit the current drawn by the remainder of the SCC circuit during the SCC start-up. This reduced voltage begins at zero and ramps to the voltage provided at the SCC input. Once the reduced voltage reaches the input voltage level, steady-state operation of the SCC may begin.

In an embodiment, a DC-DC power conversion circuit with a step-down conversion ratio of at least 12:1 is provided. The DC-DC power conversion circuit includes a half-bridge circuit arrangement, a resonant capacitor and a module including a hybrid transformer. The hybrid transformer includes a magnetic core and a primary winding electrically coupled in series with a secondary winding. The module further includes a synchronous rectifier having an output coupled between the primary winding and the secondary winding of the hybrid transformer, and an output capacitor coupled with an output of the secondary winding.

Soft start of switched capacitor converters by reducing voltage provided by initial power switch

A semiconductor device includes a semiconductor body having a drift zone of a first conductivity type and a drift control zone. A junction termination structure is at a first side of the semiconductor body. A first dielectric is between the drift zone and the drift control zone. A second dielectric is at a second side of the semiconductor body. The drift control zone includes a first drift control subregion of the first conductivity type and a second drift control subregion of a second conductivity type between the first drift control subregion and the second dielectric.
