An induction furnace with a crucible having a crucible axis, an induction coil and a furnace body containing a gas-tight jacket, and also with a cover which can be placed on the furnace body and has at least one gas connection, a charging valve and a pouring apparatus, the furnace body and cover being joined together releasably but hermetically by a flange connection, and being journaled in the joined state in a furnace frame by a tilting mechanism which engages the cover, and after the flange connection is separated the cover body can be removed from the furnace body which remains in the furnace frame.

A method and apparatus for forming a stream of molten material. The apparatus includes a melt container having a bottom wall in which is formed an aperture. A funnel is adapted and constructed to receive molten material from the aperture in the container, and includes a plurality of fluid-cooled metallic segments. The funnel segments define an inner funnel contour that decreases in cross-sectional area from the inlet end to the outlet end of the funnel. An electrically conductive coil surrounds the funnel, and has a shape corresponding to the outer shape of said funnel. A source of medium-frequency current in selective electrical connection with the coil. The method begins with the step of providing a predetermined quantity of molten material in a melt container. A metallic funnel is provided in fluid communication with the melt container, and includes a plurality of fluid-cooled funnel segments. The method also includes the step of providing an electrically conductive coil surrounding the funnel. When molten material flows from the melt container through the funnel, AC current is passed through the coil at an intensity sufficient to heat the molten material flowing through the funnel.

A furnace chamber contains a chassis to which a closure plate for said chamber is removably fixed. A tilting frame is borne by said chassis in a pair of coaxial tilting bearings, one of which incorporates a rotary lead through for power lines and cooling lines to an induction coil surrounding a crucible on the tilting frame. To permit pre-alloys with a high percentage of reactive metal to be handled more easily, a casting is produced from the reactive and nonreactive metals by a casting process followed by solification. This casting is nonreactive at its surface at room temperature and its average content of reactive metal is equal to or greater than the reactive metal content in the crucible. Such castings are added to the crucible according to the need for the reactive metal. In an especially advantageous manner, a casting produced in a casting mold in a nonreactive atmosphere has at least at its surface such a content of nonreactive metal that it is stable at room temperature.

In a melting furnace with weight-related control of the consumable electrode, the electrode mounting is disposed in a separate pressure chamber which has an inverted bottle-shaped configuration. The downwardly extending neck-like portion is passed sealingly through an opening in the cover plate of the melting chamber. The pressure chamber is suspended from a crossbeam which can be driven vertically by means of spindles. On the upper end of the pressure chamber there is provided a bellows whose upper edge is joined to the upper, tubular portion of the electrode holding rod, while a solid rod holding a current-carrying tube extends coaxially through the tubular portion and is hung from a frame which suspends the electrode holding rod and which is supported on the crossbeam by a sensor. Between the crossbeam and the hanger frame there is provided an auxiliary cylinder which is joined by a pressure hose 33 to the pressure cylinder, by which the pressure forces acting on the tubular portion and the electrode holding rod are compensated.

This weight jump can be prevented by means of mechanical devices, or can be made so small that it no longer constitutes a disturbance. However, the expenditure for this is disproportionately high. The invention is more cost efficient, since hardware or software means suffice. The weight function G=f(t) is extrapolated and compared with the actually measured weight G'=f(t). The magnitude of the difference between the two is stored and later added as a correction value.
