A more efficient breeding against plant disease, or the development of new resistant lines, is enabled via the provision of the resistance-mediating gene according to the invention; in particular, a resistance effect in the target plant is evoked by the property of the identified gene. The resistance-mediating gene, and embodiments of the present invention that are described in the preceding, offer additional applications, e.g., the use of the resistant gene allele in trans-genetic approaches, with the goal of developing new resistant cultivars.

Gene for resistance to plant disease

The present invention provides a new nucleic acid molecule which encodes a polypeptide that is able to convey a resistance to a pathogen, in particular to 'Beet Necrotic Yellow Vein Virus' in a plant, in particular a plant of thegenus, in which the polypeptide is expressed, and also a preferred nucleic acid molecule encoding the RZ-3 gene of, derivatives and homologues thereof. Further aspects of the invention include vectors, transgenic plant cells, transgenic plants, methods for production thereof, and methods for identifying a resistance-conveying nucleic acid molecule.
