The invention relates to novel oxime derivatives of diphenyl ethers of the formula ##STR1## wherein R is hydrogen or halogen or a nitro or cyano group and Q is a straight-chain or branched C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkylene bridge. These compounds have good selective herbicidal action, they inhibit plant growth, and can be employed as safeners for protecting cultivated plants from the phytotoxic action of certain herbicides.

The invention relates to novel oxime derivatives of diphenyl ethers of the formula ##STR1## wherein Q is an aliphatic or araliphatic ether or ester radical, R.sub.1 is halogen or a nitro, cyano or trifluoromethyl group, each of R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 is hydrogen, halogen or a nitro or cyano group, R.sub.4 is hydrogen or halogen and X is hydrogen, halogen or a member selected from the group consisting of cyano, nitro, lower alkyl, lower alkanoyl, carboxylic acid lower alkyl ester or carboxamide. These compounds have good selective herbicidal action, they inhibit plant growth, and can be employed as safeners for protecting cultivated plants from the phytotoxic action of aggressive agrochemicals.

The invention relates to novel 3-haloalkoxy-4-nitro-2'-chloro-4'-trifluoromethyl-diphenyl ethers with herbicidal properties. These compounds have good selectivity in different crops of useful plants, e.g. cereals, rice, cotton and, in particular, soybeans and maize. The novel compounds have the formula I ##STR1## wherein R is difluoromethyl or 2-chloro-1,1,2-trifluoroethyl.

In the formula Hal is a halogen atom, m is an integer 1, 2, or 3, Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom or the cyano group, Z is a halogen atom or the cyano group, R.sub.1 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, and R is an acid function. Methods are disclosed for combatting weeds in mono- and dicotyledonous cultures such as cereals, corn, rice, soya and cotton, which comprise applying to the locus to be protected from weeds a dosage of from 0.1 to 10.0 kilograms per hectare of the above compounds.

The m-Cyanoalkoxy-phenylureas of the formula I ##STR1## wherein X is hydrogen or halogen, Y--O is a preferably branched-chain cyanoalkoxy group, and --NR.sub.1 R.sub.2 is a primary, secondary or heterocyclic amino group, exhibit surprisingly good herbicidal activity against mono- and dicotyledonous plants, with a selective action in crops of maize, cereals, cotton and soya bean, and in the case of some of these compounds also in rape crops.
