An electrolytic bath for coating articles of magnesium and its alloys consists essentially of an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal silicate (e.g., potassium silicate), an alkali metal hydroxide (e.g., potassium hydroxide) and a fluoride (e.g., hydrofluoric acid). In the process, the magnesium article is immersed in the bath and an electrical potential is applied between the magnesium article serving as the anode, and a cathode immersed in the bath until a visible spark is discharged on the surface of the metal. The potential difference is maintained for a few minutes until the desired coating thickness is formed.

Method of coating articles of magnesium and an electrolytic bath therefor

A lead-acid storage battery having a lead negative electrode, a lead dioxide positive electrode and a sulfuric acid electrolyte having an organic catalyst dissolved therein which prevents dissolution of the electrodes into lead sulfate whereby in the course of discharge, the lead dioxide is reduced to lead oxide and the lead is oxidized.

Lead-acid cell

To produce a corrosion-resistant coating thereon which is hard and uniform and capable of withstanding the action of strong acids and alkalis, a body of magnesium metal or an alloy of magnesium is first treated with an aqueous solution of hydrofluoric acid to form a fluoromagnesium layer on the metal surface. The coated metal is then immersed in an electrolyte bath comprising an aqueous solution of alkali metal silicate, and an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide. An electrical potential is applied between the magnesium metal anode and a cathode (iron or nickel) in the bath until a visible spark is discharged on the surface of the metal. The potential difference is maintained for a few minutes until a uniform silicate layer is formed on the fluoromagnesium layer.

Anti-corrosive coating on magnesium and its alloys

A unique storge cell is provided in which the active mass on the positive electrode is a mixture of crystalline and an effective amount of polycrystalline lead superoxide (PbO.sub.2). These cells are characterized, inter alia, by their remarkably lower internal resistance, higher activity, better charging and discharging characteristics, lower sulphatization, higher storage capacity and greater ability to draw larger amounts of electric current in a considerably shorter period of time as compared with conventional lead-acid storage cells. Storage devices (e.g., a battery) made from such cells also exhibit superior performance characterstics as compared with storage devices made from the conventional lead-acid cells. Batteries made from such cells will be referred to as 'lead-crystal' batteries. Also, several methods are described for making the polycrystalline and crystalline lead superoxide (active mass).
