A ladle scraper mechanism 20 comprises an outer frame 44 which supports and guides a carrier assembly 58 for up and down movement to move scraper legs 57, with scraper blades 72 at their lower ends, down along the lining of a ladle 22 containing a bath 40 of molten metal while vibrators 70 on the top of the legs vibrate them and pneumatic actuators 68 on the carrier assembly force the legs to swing radially outwardly against the ladle walls.

Emergency cooling for an electric furnace is carried out by flowing municipal water through one part of a heat exchanger and through a hydraulic motor and using the motor output to drive a pump which forces coolant liquid in recirculatory fashion through the furnace and through another part of the heat exchanger.

Cooling of electrical furnaces

Scrap metal is preheated by electrical radiant heating means. Volatiles driven off from the metal are mixed with air and are blown through conduits which constitute the electrical radiant heating elements. Combustion takes place inside the conduits and the products of combustion are directed through openings in the conduits onto the scrap metal. The temperature and pressure in the system is controlled by dampers arranged at each end of the conduits to vary gas recirculation.

A controlled atmosphere furnace having radiant heating tubes, through which hot gases from a fuel burner are passed, is converted to electrical operation by removing the fuel burner and exhaust connections from the heating tubes and replacing these with electrical connector extensions connected to an electrical power source so that electrical current is driven longitudinally through the heating tube walls and converted therein to heat which is radiated into the furnace enclosure.

In apparatus for resistance-heating elongated workpieces by direct passage of current therethrough, a device for displacing the elongated workpieces longitudinally into and out of the apparatus includes rail means providing a transporting surface into and out of the apparatus, electrode carriers having rollers rollably supporting the electrode carriers on the rail means, and drive means for driving the electrode carriers along the rail means in axial direction of a respective workpiece.

Conductive heating device

A preheating arrangement for bringing foundry ladles up to temperature is described. The arrangement comprises a slotted elongated graphite rod extending down from a ladle cover, a pair of clamp and contact elements extending through the cover and a transformer above the cover with a shell around the transformer forming a single turn secondary winding connected directly to the clamp and contact elements. A graphite element is coated to protect it from corrosive atmospheres by heating it, while buried in sand, to the fusing temperature of the sand and then allowing it to cool.
