Machining the circumferences of workpieces, particularly piston rings, in a variety of out-of-round contours and diameters requires only a single copying disc having a basic out-of-round contour. The copying disc is driven in synchronism with the angle of rotation alpha of piston rings to be machined by a direct current servomotor and, in order to generate the desired out-of-round contour, is caused to deviate from its synchronous movement by pulses received from a computer for the leading and lagging difference angles of rotation delta phi. An adjustable coupling member is provided between a copying disc sensor (such as a double lever) and the tool holder for transferring the out-of-round contour from the copying disc to the workpiece.

Method and apparatus for machining the circumference of out-of-round

For the out-of-round shaping of workpieces, subsequent to the circumferential machining of a first workpiece or workpiece stack, the actual contour thereof is traced, then compared with the predetermined desired contour and the obtained deviations between the desired contour and actual contour are used for the correction of the desired contour for further machining.

Method and lathe for machining out-of-round circumferences

Apparatus for positioning a workpiece, such as a piston ring, which has an out-of-round inner circumferential face with a radially inwardly directed portion that deviates from the out-of-round contour. The apparatus includes first and second spaced cylindrical rollers each having a diameter which is substantially less than the diameter of the workpiece. Means are provided for rotating the rollers in the same direction about their respective longitudinal axes. Braking means, which is interposed between the rollers and may be in the form of a brake shoe, has a frontal face positioned with respect to the peripheral surfaces of the rollers so that the frontal face contacts only the portion of the inner circumferential face of the workpiece which deviates from the out-of-round contour. When the frontal face of the braking means or brake shoe is in contact with the deviated portion of the workpiece, the rollers are spaced from the workpiece causing the workpiece to be braked and positioned at the portion of the circumferential face which differs from the normal out-of-round contour. At all other positions of the workpiece, it rests on the rollers with only its own weight and is not touched by the brake shoe.

An apparatus for the non-circular peripheral machining of an out-of-round workpiece includes a lathe spindle for rotating the workpiece; a radially displaceable tool holder for carrying a tool to engage a peripheral face of the workpiece; a first and a second setting motor for displacing the tool holder in a radial direction during rotation of the lathe spindle; a first connecting device coupling the output of the first setting motor with the second setting motor and the tool holder for displacing, with incremental steps, the second setting motor and the tool holder as a unit in the radial direction; and a second connecting device coupling the output of the second setting motor with the tool holder for displacing, with incremental steps--that are of different magnitude from those of the first setting motor--the tool holder in the radial direction relative to the first connecting device and the first setting motor.
