A cooling arrangement for cooling a fuel cell in a fuel cell system is disclosed. The cooling arrangement has at least two fluidically connected cooling circuits in which a liquid coolant medium flows, The first cooling circuit includes a first coolant pump, a fuel cell heat exchanger, a heating unit, and a charge air cooler, which is in heat-exchanging contact with compressed supply air flowing to the fuel cell. The second cooling circuit includes a cooling heat exchanger for cooling the liquid coolant medium. The cooling arrangement includes at least one further coolant pump.

Cooling arrangement for cooling a fuel cell

An electrochemical fuel cell stack includes a membrane electrode assembly and a distributor plate. The distributor plate includes a channel region having gas channels for distributing reaction gas to the membrane electrode assembly, a first port area for supplying reaction gas to the channel region, and a second port area for removing reaction gas from the channel region. The gas channels are disentangled and each distributed in a respective separate channel area, at least one of the gas channels having at least one deflection point between the first and second port areas.

Electrochemical fuel cell stack

A fuel cell stack for gaseous fuel includes a membrane electrode unit and a distribution plate including a channel area having gas channels for distributing the anode gas and the cathode gas to the membrane electrode unit and a port area for supplying the anode gas and the cathode gas into the channel area. Additional connecting channels discharge from the port areas along the gas channels so that unused anode gas or cathode gas is locally meterable from the port areas into the gas channels via these connecting channels.

A power supply for an auxiliary power unit APU of a combustion vehicle having a combustion engine includes a fuel cell with a hydrogen input, an oxygen input and an exhaust output, an electrolyzer capable of generating hydrogen and oxygen from water, a hydrogen storage for storing hydrogen produced by the electrolyzer, a water supply (for supplying water to the electrolyzer), and a pressure pump for adjusting the pressure between the water supply and the electrolyzer.

Auxiliary power supply for a vehicle with a combustion engine and method for operating same

An electrochemical cell stack comprises a plurality of membrane electrode assemblies interposed between pairs of separator plates. The stack comprises adhesively bonded layers. Preferably each membrane electrode assembly is adhesively bonded to the adjacent pair of separator plates. The adhesive bond between the plate and membrane electrode assembly preferably provides a substantially gas and liquid-tight seal around the perimeter of the electrochemically active area of the membrane electrode assembly and around any fluid manifold openings formed therein. Alternatively, or in addition, adjoining pairs of separator plates in an electrochemical cell stack may be adhesively bonded together. Such pairs of adhesively bonded plates may define cooling spaces between neighboring cells. Stacks comprising a plurality of individual cell modules may be formed, each module comprising a membrane electrode assembly bonded to a pair of separator plates.

A bipolar electrode-electrolyte unit for an electrochemical cell includes a barrier layer, at least two carrier layers and at least two active layers, and an electrolyte. The active layers comprise an electroactive material with low resistance and high capacitance. The barrier layer is electrically conducting, is impermeable to matter, and is made of compressed carbon, impregnated carbon, compressed and impregnated carbon, plastic-bonded carbon or carbon-coated sheet metal. The carrier layers, each located between a barrier layer and an active layer, form an electrically conducting porous three-dimensional structure with a large specific surface that contains a material selected from the group consenting of carbon fiber papers, carbon fiber films, carbon fiber mats, carbon fiber fabrics, compressed graphite flakes and carbon fibers, conducting plastic, and carbon produced by pyrolysis or dehydration of organic materials.

Bipolar electrode-electrolyte unit

A double-layer capacitor is composed of at least two individual double-layer capacitor cells connected in series, with bipolar electrodes and electrolyte layers being provided alternately. Each a bipolar electrode includes an electrically conducting carrier with an active layer applied on both sides, the active layer having a low resistance and large active surface. The carrier provides an electrically conducting barrier between the adjoining ion-conducting electrolyte layers, and the electrodes and electrolyte layers are permanently connected. An electrically conducting binder is integrated into the active layer, or a separate connecting layer is provided to promote adhesion between the active and electrolyte layers.

A method and apparatus for carrying out an electrolytic process produces clean gases, such as oxygen and hydrogen. For this purpose, a porous diaphragm is arranged between the cathode and the anode of an electrolyzer, and a liquid electrolyte is fixed in the pores of the cathode and anode. A first gas chamber adjoins the cathode, while a second gas chamber adjoins the anode, and an educt chamber is separated from the first gas chamber by a membrane. An aqueous, non-corrosive solution of salts of inorganic and organic acids or mixtures of water with organic additives is used as an educt, which, compared with the electrolyte, has a higher partial water vapor pressure.

Electrolysis process and apparatus

An electrolyzer has an educt chamber, a membrane, a cathode-side product chamber, a porous cathode, a diaphragm, a porous anode, in which case a liquid electrolyte can be fixed in the pores of the anode and the cathode, and an anode-side product chamber. Between the membrane and the cathode-side product chamber, a first electrically conductive plate and, adjacent to the anode-side product gas chamber, a second electrically conductive plate, are situated. The two conductive plates are used for the current supply to and the current removal from the electrodes.

Electrolyzer

The invention provides a flow module comprising sandwiched plate elements, with at least one of each pair of adjacent plate element surfaces having a profiling which has a linear parallel construction so that a plurality of linear parallel flow ducts is formed between adjacent plate elements. These flow ducts can be charged with a first and a second fluid in an alternating manner by way of feeding and removal ducts formed by mutually aligned openings in the plate elements. To seal off the flow spaces and the feeding and removal ducts, seals are provided, and the openings for the feeding and removal ducts extend essentially across the whole end area of the profiling so that a distinct feeding and removal space is formed. According to the invention, for a mechanical stabilization several webs are arranged in the openings for the feeding and removal ducts in the profiled plate elements. These webs which are arranged in the inlet area or outlet area of the profiling end below the plate element surface.
