A method and apparatus for providing a contoured design confirguration in the wall of an open ended container workpiece employs plural molds on a rotating turret an which a plurality of molds are provided with each mold having an inwardly facing wall having the desired configuration. The workpiece is delivered from a pneumatic conveyor and vacuum star wheel into an open mold which then closes and the interior of the workpiece is pressurized with air. A rotary wand moves into the workpiece and discharges high velocity rotating liquid jets against the inner wall surface of the workpiece to forcefully move the wall outwardly into conforming contact with the inner wall surface of the mold to effect permanent reshaping of the workpiece into the desired configuration. Spent workfluid is continuously removed from the workpiece while the high velocity liquid jets are impinging on the inner surface of the workpiece so that static pressure does not build up in the workpiece nor play any substantial part in the reshaping operation which is effected solely by the impact force of the high velocity jets. Upon completion of the shaping of the wall, the finished container is removed from the mold and conveyed by a vacuum starwheel to a pneumatic removal corner.

A beverage container with increased strength includes a generally cylindrical sidewall that is disposed around a vertical axis, and a bottom. The bottom provides a supporting surface and includes a bottom recess portion that is disposed radially inwardly of the supporting surface. The bottom recess portion includes a concave domed panel that is disposed a positional distance above the supporting surface by a dome positioning portion of this bottom recess portion. The domed panel includes a portion thereof with a curvature in the range wherein increases in the curvature decrease the static dome reversal pressure; and the dome positioning portion includes first and second parts thereof that are disposed at different radial distances from the vertical axis and that provide increases in both roll-out resistance and static dome reversal pressure. In various embodiments the first and second parts are circumferential, arcuate, at longitudinal; and, in at least some embodiments an increase in cumulative drop height is achieved as well as increases in both roll-out resistance and static dome reversal pressure.

An aluminum one-piece container body, defining a sidewall and bottom, has a substantially hemispherical or otherwise convex, preferably curvilinear, surface surrounding a central concave panel. A plurality of feet extend downwardly from the convex region. The convex region provides strength advantages associated with containing pressurized material. A concave panel accommodates changes in differential pressures such as arising from pasteurization or other heating. The feet are preferably configured to provide substantial stackability and conveyability as well as support stability for the container.

A method and apparatus for reshaping a container body (e.g., a metal, drawn and ironed container body) utilizing a floating mechanism for imparting an axial load is disclosed. In one embodiment, a container may have a substantially cylindrical sidewall with an inner surface and outer surface, where a shape defining means has a contoured surface positionable with respect to a container sidewall. When a floating mechanism imparts an axial load, a fluid seal is maintained allowing sidewall deformation by means of a directed pressurized fluid.

The present invention provides an apparatus for shaping/embossing thin-walled work pieces, and is particularly apt for realizing complex and non-uniform shapes/designs in cylindrical metal container bodies. In one application, at least one pressurized fluid stream is ejected directly against one side of container body sidewall with a configured surface provided on the other side of the container body sidewall to achieve the desired shaping/embossing. At least one of the pressurized fluid stream and configured surface may be disposed for rotational and/or longitudinal motion. Such driven motion can be utilized to achieve progressive helical working of a cylindrical metal container body, thereby yielding the desired shaping/embossing.

A method and apparatus for reshaping a container body (e.g., a metal, drawn and ironed container body) utilizing multiple fluids is disclosed. One fluid applies a generally low fluid pressure to the surface to be reshaped, while the other fluid applies a generally high fluid impact pressure to the surface to reform the same by changing its shape. In one embodiment, the interior of a drawn and ironed container body is pressurized with an appropriate gas (e.g., air) and a nozzle is introduced into the interior of the container body to apply a concentrated force to the interior surface of the container body with a high velocity liquid stream (e.g., water).

A method of enhancing the axial strength of a metal container includes reforming the lower sidewall portion of a container which has a stripper bulge integrally formed therein as a result of conventional stripping operations by rotating the container, moving a bearing element axially toward the closed end of the container to engage the stripper bulge and continue moving the bearing element axially for a predetermined distance along a linear path disposed at an acute angle in relation to the central axis of the container to thereby deflect the stripper bulge and the lower sidewall portion of the container radially inwardly and substantially reduce the stripper bulge.

Method of reforming a metal container to increase container strength

A container with improved strength includes a cylindrical sidewall that is disposed around a vertical axis, and a bottom. The bottom of the container provides a supporting surface and includes a bottom recess portion that is disposed radially inwardly of the supporting surface. The bottom recess portion includes a center panel, and a dome positioning portion that positions the center panel above the supporting surface. The dome positioning portion includes a first part that is disposed at a first radial distance from the vertical axis and adjacent part that is disposed at a different radial distance from the vertical axis. In the container, a plurality of the adjacent parts are arcuately disposed are circumferentially spaced around the dome positioning portion and are interspersed with a plurality of the first parts. In the container the adjacent part is disposed circumferentially around the dome positioning portion at one height from the supporting surface, and the first part is disposed circumferentially around the dome positioning portion at a different height from the supporting surface.
