A recyclable film contains a base film of polyethylene that has been oriented, annealed, and irradiatively crosslinked, and a sealant. The base film has a free shrink rate of less than 10% in both the machine direction and the transverse direction when exposed to heat of 90° C. These recyclable films are ideal for use as packaging components that can be hermetically heat sealed to themselves or other packaging components, while maintaining low shrink and excellent appearance.

Recyclable films and packaging

Described herein are recyclable films with an outer surface comprising a polar polymer, such as polyamide, an inner surface comprising a sealant, and a polar polymer compatibilizer located between the polar polymer and the sealant. Preferably the outer surface is an outer layer of biaxially oriented polyamide and the inner surface is a multilayer inner film comprising the sealant and the compatibilizer.

Recyclable film

The present invention provides a peelable microwavable food package capable of absorbing undesired liquids released from packaged food products during storage, display, or heating, including microwave cooking. The present invention provides a peelably sealed microwavable food package in any packaging format including pouches, flow-wrap, horizontal form fill seal (HFFS), vertical form fill seal (VFFS), gas-flushed, vacuum-packaged, sealed rigid plastic containers and the like.

Peelable absorbent food package

The present invention provides multilayer absorbent laminates useful for absorbing undesired liquids released from packaged food products during storage, display, or heating, including microwave cooking. In one aspect, the present invention provides a multilayer absorbent laminate comprising a first layer comprising an absorbent material, a second layer comprising a polymeric bonding material, a third layer comprising a polymeric support film layer, and a fourth layer comprising an adhesive.

A package for storing or preparing food or other products includes a flexible pouch within which the product can be sealed, and a box' or other container sized to hold the pouch. To seal the product in the pouch, the pouch includes a peelable seal that seals a portion of a first thermoplastic film to a portion of a second thermoplastic film, such films optionally forming walls of the pouch. The package, including the container and the pouch, is configured for beating the sealed product m &#x2033; a microwave oven, in a heated state, pressure inside the pouch increases to expand the pouch, and the container constrains or limits expansion of the pouch in some places but not at an expansion region of the container. A portion of the peelable seal is proximate such region, producing a separation in such peelable sea! portion such that the pouch self-vents through the separation.

The present invention is directed to packages having a flexible top sheet sealed to a flexible embossed bottom sheet The flexible bottom sheet comprises a plurality of embossed peaks and valleys wherein each valley has a defined perimeter with a valley base integrally connected to a valley wall which thereby defines an individual liquid containment cell. The packages according to the present invention are heat resistant to allow food packaged therein to be cooked in a microwave oven such that a substantial amount of water and/or grease released by the food during the cooking process is captured beneath a food contact surface in a plurality of embossed individual liquid containment cells, in preferred embodiments, the package of the present invention is a microwavable form-fill-seal package or microwavable vacuum package for storing and cooking a precooked or cured food product with substantial water and/or fat content.

A package film comprising a biaxially oriented film and pattern connection layer is described. The package film comprises an exterior layer comprising a biaxially oriented film. The biaxially oriented film is a biaxially oriented nylon film or a biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate film. The package film also comprises an interior layer comprising a sealant film, and a pattern connection layer positioned between and directly adjacent each of the exterior layer and the interior layer. The pattern connection layer comprises a solvent-based adhesive or a water-based adhesive. The package film has a secant modulus greater than 120,000 psi and an elongation at break of less than 150%. The package film is adapted to form an evacutable storage bag. Various embodiments of the package films are also described.

A tamper evident label with a fully enclosed peel tab is described. This label comprises a first edge, a second edge, a third edge, a fourth edge and a label interior. The label also comprises a tear strip comprising a first tab, a first portion having a first border and an opposing second border, a second portion having a third border and an opposing fourth border, and a scored edge. The second border of the first portion is adjacent the first edge of the label, the fourth border is adjacent the third edge of the label, and the scored edge is adjacent the first border and the third border of the first portion of the tear strip. The label further comprises a second tab comprising a first side and a second side. The first side is adjacent the first border, and the second side is adjacent the third border. Various embodiments of the label are also described.

The present disclosure is concerned with chub packaging webs with improved puncture resistance suitable for use in chub packaging. The webs have a double waii partially laminated structure. The structure is conveniently formed by adhesively laminating two component films in a face to face configuration using a pattern of adhesive which leaves a substantial portion of the two facing surfaces unlaminated. Preferably, each of the component films comprise at least one layer of nylon and has a moisture content of greater than 1% by weight such that the double wall partially laminated web has a total energy impact absorption value of greater 0.59 foot-pound at &#x2212;20&#xb0; C. measured in accordance with ASTM D-7192 test method.

Chub packaging webs with enhanced puncture resistance

The present disclosure is concerned with packages formed from thermoformable webs with improved puncture resistance suitable for use in semi-automatic horizontal form fill and seal (HFFS) packaging machines and a process for packaging hard food items with sharp angular surfaces using such webs in such machines. The webs have a double wall partially laminated structure. The structure is conveniently formed by adhesively laminating two component films in a face to face configuration using a pattern of adhesive which leaves a substantial portion of the two facing surfaces unlaminated. The lamination just needs to be sufficient that the two component films will hot form together when they are vacuum drawn into a die to form a cavity for packaging the food items. The lamination pattern can vary from just edge strips to the edge strips and a honey comb pattern or a pattern of dots over the facing surfaces between the edge strips.

Non-shrink, forming and nonforming thermoplastic webs comprising a myoglobin blooming agent on a food contact surface are useful for packaging fresh meat and other products to fix a desirable color on the surface of the product.

The present invention is directed to a peelable packaging film comprising a first thermoplastic substrate and a second thermoplastic substrate wherein the packaging film has a Heat Shrinkage value between 0 and 10% at 102&#xb0; C. in either the machine or transverse directions. The first and second substrates each have a first surface and a second surface. Each of the first surfaces comprises a polyolefin and has a surface energy of at least 36 dynes/cm. At least one first surface is oriented, preferably biaxially oriented, and at least one first surface is non-heat shrinkable. In contact with both first surfaces is a contiguous adhesive layer. A peelable interface is provided between the adhesive layer and at least one the first surfaces of the substrates. The peelable interface is adapted to have a peelable seal strength of between 60 and 2,500 grams-force/in.

The present invention describes vacuum skin packages comprising a thermoplastic film and a polyester substrate wherein the thermoplastic film includes at least a first polymer layer having a first surface and an opposing second surface and comprises an ethylene/unsaturated ester copolymer, wherein the first surface has been surface treated in a manner to exhibit a surface tension of between 36-60 dynes/cm. The thermoplastic film is adapted to form a peelable seal between the first surface of the first polymer layer of the thermoplastic film and the polyester substrate by a pressure of less than 1&#xd7;10Pa applied therebetween, wherein the peelable seal has a seal strength of between 0.5-6 lb./in. (0.09-1.08 kg/cm).

A method of distributing or commercializing fresh meat having the general steps of butchering a slaughtered animal into a plurality of retail cuts; packaging the retail cuts into a plurality of articles wherein each article comprises a polymeric oxygen barrier film having a transparent portion in contact with at least a portion of the fresh meat product; transporting the packaged article to a retail outlet, wherein the packaged article is adapted for retail display and sale without removing the polymeric film and wherein the fresh meat product has a desirable appearance especially a desirable red color e.g. having an 'a*' value of at least about 15 for the fresh beef product or of at least about 6 for a fresh pork or fresh poultry product and the color is maintained for at least five days and up to four weeks or more after display.
