A cooling system includes one or more air channeling sub-systems that provide cooling air to electronic equipment, at least one heat removal sub-system that removes heat from the cooling air in at least one of the air channeling sub-systems, at least one temperature sensor measures a wet bulb temperature of outside air, and at least one controller. At least one of the air channeling sub-systems includes an outside air damper operable allow outside air into the air channeling sub-system. The at least one controller at least partially opens the outside air damper if a wet bulb temperature measured at the at least one temperature sensor drops to or below a predetermined temperature.

Airflow control system with external air control

A data center includes various sets of infrastructure modules which each provide a particular type of infrastructure support to support computing operations in the data center. Separate sets of infrastructure modules can be installed incrementally based on incrementally changing support capacity for the corresponding type of infrastructure support in the data center. Such incrementally changing support capacity can be based upon support requirements of electrical loads, including rack computer systems, which are inbound to the data center. Where support capacity for a particular type of infrastructure support drops below a threshold, a quantity of additional infrastructure modules which provide the particular type of infrastructure support can be selected and installed to increase the support capacity. Separate sets of infrastructure modules can be selected and installed independently of each other, to independently adjust support capacity for separate types of infrastructure support, which can minimize excess support capacity at any given time.

Flexible data center infrastructure distribution

A system for performing computing operations in a data center includes one or more sets of computer systems, one or more primary power systems, and a reserve power system. The primary power systems include at least one power distribution unit that supplies power to at least one of the sets of computer systems. The reserve power system automatically supplies power to at least one of the sets of computer systems if a condition is met (such as a failure of the primary power system).

A modular computing system for a data center includes one or more data center modules including rack-mounted computer systems. An electrical module is coupled to the data center modules and provides electrical power to computer systems in the data center modules. One or more air handling modules are coupled to the data center modules. The data center module may include two pre-fabricated portions, each portion including a row of racks of computer systems. The two computing module portions of the data center module may combine to form a computing space when coupled to one another.

A method of adding a power feed to electrical systems includes coupling a set of input lines to a power source such that the input lines are connected to at least one phase of AC power from the power source, and coupling a set of backfeed lines to an output receptacle in a power distribution unit. The output receptacle may be connected in parallel with at least one other output receptacle that is supplying primary power to systems in the data center. The set of backfeed lines and the set of input lines may be tested to determine a match between a pair of lines in the set of backfeed lines and a pair of lines in the set of input lines. Determining the match may include matching the phase of the pair of backfeed lines with the phase of the pair of input lines.

Method and system for establishing a power feed to systems during operation

A data center includes a plurality of racks on a floor and one or more fire suppression systems coupled to at least some of the racks. The fire suppression systems include reservoirs mounted on the racks, a fire suppression material in the reservoir, and one or more material dispensing devices coupled to the reservoir. The material dispensing devices may dispense fire suppression material onto or into the racks in response to a fire condition.

A system for cooling a power distribution unit in a room of a data center includes an air handling system that supplies air to the room or removes air from the room through an opening in the room and an air directing device. The first end of the air directing device couples at the opening in the room. The second end of the air directing device couples with the power distribution unit at one or more openings of an enclosure of the power distribution unit. The air directing device directs air between the opening in the room and the one or more openings of the power distribution unit.

System and method for cooling power distribution units

A data center includes an electrical load, a connection to a utility power source, a uninterruptible power supply (UPS), a switching device and a control system. The control system is configured to cause the switching device to discontinue routing electrical power to the electrical loads via the UPS for a given period of time while electrical power is still available to be fed to the electrical loads from the utility power source. Subsequent to the given period of time, the control system cause the switching device to resume routing electrical power to the electrical loads via the UPS.

Uninterruptable power supply (UPS) management

Techniques for detecting a cause or a location associated with a power disturbance affecting a power distribution system are described. For example, an indication of such a power disturbance may be received from a power meter of the power distribution system. Power-related data may also be received from another power meter of the power distribution system based on the indication of the power disturbance. A cause or a location associated with the power disturbance may be determined based on the power-related data received from the other power meter.

Detecting power disturbances based on networked power meters

A data center includes heat producing components and an air handling system that provides reduced relative humidity air to cool the heat producing components. The air handling system includes a thermal storage unit that removes thermal energy from incoming air under a given set of ambient air conditions and releases thermal energy into incoming air under another set of ambient air conditions. Under the given set of ambient air conditions, the thermal storage unit cools the incoming air and causes water vapor to condense out of the incoming air. Under the other set of ambient air conditions, the thermal storage unit releases thermal energy into the incoming air, thus heating the incoming air.

Free cooling in high humidity environments

A power distribution system for a data center includes a transformer that transforms three-phase source power to three-phase operating power. The phase-to-neutral operating voltage for each phase is at least about 260 volts. Power distribution units are coupled to the transformer. The power distribution units supply operating power from the transformer to computer systems in the data center.

A computer room includes rack mounted computing devices and multiple air handling systems for cooling the computer room. A model based cooling control system is implemented on resources of a provider network that includes the rack mounted computing devices. The model based cooling control system uses a model of the computer room to iteratively perform calculations to determine a set of control parameters for cooling the computer room. The set of control parameters are selected to reduce or optimize an amount of energy and/or water used to cool the computer room while satisfying one or more conditions for cooling the computer room such as a maximum allowable temperature of the room and/or a maximum allowable temperature of the rack mounted computing devices in the computer room.

Model based cooling control system

A system for removing heat from electrical systems includes a dehumidification device including a desiccant, an evaporative cooling device, air moving devices, and an air flow control devices. The air moving device moves air through the dehumidification device, the evaporative cooling device, and the electrical systems. The air flow control device controls a rate of flow through the dehumidification device.
