Anodic materials for lithium ions batteries include a current collector and a superlattice disposed on at least a portion of the current collector, the superlattice comprising: alternating layers of an anode active material and an anode inactive material; and a plurality of channels that extend from the current collector through the alternating layers of anode active material and anode inactive material.

Patterned anode for lithium-ion batteries

A non-stoichiometric nanocomposite coating and method of making and using the coating. The non-stoichiometric nanocomposite coating is disposed on a base material, such as a metal or ceramic; and the nanocomposite consists essentially of a matrix of an alloy selected from the group of Cu, Ni, Pd, Pt and Re which are catalytically active for cracking of carbon bonds in oils and greases and a grain structure selected from the group of borides, carbides and nitrides.

Systems and processes for forming seals. The seals have graphene embedded in the seal. The graphene-embedded seals exhibit improved wear resistance over seals without graphene.

Graphene embedded seal

A nanocomposite coating that in turn extract self-replenishing (or -healing), superlubricious carbon film directly from natural gas or hydrocarbon gas in mechanical systems. The coating deposits on sealing and sliding surfaces reducing friction and wear. The result is a reduction in inefficiency, machine breakdown, and adverse environmental impact.

Superlubricious carbon films derived from natural gas

A hard, wear resistant coating and a method of forming the coating on a substrate to be exposed to hydrocarbons is provided. A substrate is provided in a chamber. A film is deposited onto the substrate by physical vapor deposition (PVD), where the film includes a bulk layer and an outer termination layer. The deposition of the termination layer is mitigated. The termination layer is removed from the film, leaving the remaining bulk layer disposed over the substrate. And when the substrate is exposed to hydrocarbons in an environment having wear additives, friction modifiers, or naturally occurring compounds, a durable tribological layer is formed on an outer surface of the bulk layer to create a coating having low friction and anti-wear properties.

Method to produce catalytically active nanocomposite coatings

A lubricant composition includes an oil including a plurality of long-chain hydrocarbon molecules. A quantity of a catalytically active metal-organic additive is mixed with the oil. The metal-organic additive is formulated to fragment the long-chain hydrocarbon molecules of the oil into at least one of dimers and trimers under the influence of at least one of a mechanical loading and a thermal loading. Producing carbon-based boundary films from catalytically active lubricant additives

An article of manufacture and method of forming a borided material. An electrochemical cell is used to process a substrate to deposit a plurality of borided layers on the substrate. The plurality of layers are co-deposited such that a refractory metal boride layer is disposed on a substrate and a rare earth metal boride conforming layer is disposed on the refractory metal boride layer.

Method for ultra-fast boriding

A method of ultra-fast boriding of a metal surface. The method includes the step of providing a metal component, providing a molten electrolyte having boron components therein, providing an electrochemical boriding system including an induction furnace, operating the induction furnace to establish a high temperature for the molten electrolyte, and boriding the metal surface to achieve a boride layer on the metal surface.

Ultra-fast boriding of metal surfaces for improved properties

A high performance hard disk drive is disclosed in which a flying read/write head runs in contact or in near contact with a rotating platter. In this design there is no wear of the hard disk platter or flying head due to both head and platter being coated with an amorphous carbon that has an exceptionally low coefficient of friction in a sealed, inert gas environment. The overcoat contains carbon in the range between about 52 and 80 atomic percent and hydrogen in the range between about 20 to 48 atomic percent. There is no lubricant required in this design, which eliminates a significant cause of hard drive failure from oxidation of the lubricant, stiction and rippling of the lubricant. This contact method achieves a high areal density with no wear, within a robust, hermetically sealed environment.

High performance computer hard disk drive with a carbon overcoat and method of improving hard disk performance

Methods and compositions relating to the preparation of structurally and compositionally modulated composite surfaces that can potentially reduce friction and increase resistance to wear and scuffing in rolling, rotating and sliding bearing applications. Preparation of nano-to-micro size pores, holes, or dimples on a given solid surface and filling them with soft or hard coatings at desired thickness to achieve such properties.

Modulated composite surfaces

A durable, reliable high performance drive and method for digitizing, storing and retrieving data from a disk. In a first embodiment, at least one disk and components for spinning the disk, and digitizing, writing and reading data from the disk are covered with a 0.1 to 4 microns thick ultra low friction and wear, structurally amorphous carbon coating eliminating the need for a lubricant for sliding and rotating components. In a second embodiment the components for spinning the disk, and digitizing, writing and reading data from the disk are enclosed in a hermetically sealed housing and the housing is filled with a mixture of hydrogen and an inert gas.

Reliable disk drive and method

An improved coating material possessing super-hard and low friction properties and a method for forming the same. The improved coating material includes the use of a noble metal or soft metal homogeneously distributed within a hard nitride material. The addition of small amounts of such metals into nitrides such as molybdenum nitride, titanium nitride, and chromium nitride results in as much as increasing of the hardness of the material as well as decreasing the friction coefficient and increasing the oxidation resistance.
