A method of offloading compilation includes transmitting compilation information from a first subsystem to a second subsystem. The method also includes compiling computer program code into machine-executable code on the second subsystem based on the compilation information received from the first subsystem. The method further includes receiving the machine-executable code from the second subsystem into the first subsystem.

Method and system for accepting precompiled information

The present invention allows arbitrary actions to be performed when grafting the name space of one device into the name space of the same or another device. Grafting of the name space of one device into the name space of the same or another device creates a logical name space that can be presented to the user to allow the user to access information in a logically consistent manner. Active mount points are created by adding an active mount point attribute to a file or directory. When an I/O request processed by an I/O system encounters an active mount point, it turns control for processing the active mount point over to an active mount point driver. The active mount point driver assumes responsibility for processing the I/O request. In processing the I/O request, the active mount point driver decides what action should be taken to further processing of the I/O request. To further processing of the I/O request, the active mount point driver may utilize information from a variety of sources as well as make requests to other processes, drivers, systems, subsystems, devices, and so forth. Such actions may include those normally associated with an I/O request such as retrieving and mounting appropriate media as well as actions not normally associated with an I/O request.

System and method for performing defined actions when grafting the name space of one storage medium into the name space of another storage medium

A processing system processes an I/O request and, upon interruption of the I/O request, identifies an owner of an active mount point or another entity, and then resumes processing the I/O request under the control of the identified owner. Identifying the owner responsible for processing I/O requests

A server operating system supports multiple client-server sessions and enables a user to begin a session and later dynamically reconnect to that session even if the user uses two different client computers. The operating system has a multi-user session manager to enable multiple client-server sessions on the server and a multi-user stack protocol manager to manage one or more protocol stacks used in communicating with the clients. When a user connects to the server via a first client, the stack protocol manager assigns a first protocol stack to this first client-server connection and the session manager creates a first session for the user. When the user subsequently reconnects to the server using a second client that is different from the first client, the stack manager assigns a second protocol stack to a second client-server connection and the session begins creating a second session for the user. During this latter process, however, the session manager recognizes that the user is affiliated with the first session. The session manager adapts the first session to conform to the system configuration of the second client. The session manager then reassociates the second protocol stack with the reconfigured first session so that the user is returned to his/her original session, even though they logged on from a different client.

Maintaining a first session on a first computing device and subsequently connecting to the first session via different computing devices and adapting the first session to conform to the different computing devices system configurations

A standard user interface enables a user to filter an arbitrary unfamiliar data set intuitively and effectively. The illustrated interface includes a header control presenting labels, filters, and pulldown menus for each attribute of a data set, presented by an associated display control. The control communicates with a data provider through a set of APIs included in the computer's operating system. Through these APIs the data provider indicates the labels and menus to be displayed, while the header control passes new filter criteria to the data provider as it is specified by the user. The data provider filters the data set according to the user-specified filter criteria, and returns the filtered data set for display by the display control. Desirably, new filter criteria are passed to the data provider as they are being typed by the user, allowing the data provider to return successively smaller sets of result data, thus giving the visual impression of a shrinking data set. Non-textual filtering criteria can be input using non-textual interfaces, specified by the data providers. The illustrated control is data-agnostic, allowing its standardized use across a wide variety of data types and data providers.
