This invention discloses an alternative communication and control path that can by-pass a primary communication and control line in the control luminaires of an illumination network luminaires. By creating the alternative back-up path, it is possible to still communicate and control network elements in cases when the primary communication and control path is unavailable or when direct control of individual or a plurality of luminaries is desired. In one aspect of the invention, this alternative path may provide for a direct interface for demand response utility programs for specialized control of the luminaires of the illumination network.

System and method for providing alternative communication path for management of lighting network elements

A light source sequentially emits lights generated by at least three light emitting elements each emitting a different primary color to generate an image. Each light emitting element has a duty cycle in a lighting period, which may be an image frame period. A sequence scheme is provided for alternatingly driving different ones of the light emitting elements. The light emitting elements are driven in accordance with the sequence scheme at least two times in the lighting period, while maintaining the duty cycle for each light emitting element. In the sequence scheme, at least one light emitting element having the highest temperature sensitivity of all light emitting elements is driven more times than another one.

Electronic ballast protection

A gas discharge lamp is driven using a high frequency lamp current. A lamp driving circuit comprises a high frequency bridge circuit for supplying said lamp current. To prevent the lamp from extinguishing, when the lamp voltage is lower than a predetermined lamp operation voltage, a resonant circuit is provided in the lamp driving circuit between the lamp and the high frequency bridge circuit. The frequency of the bridge circuit is selected such that the resonant circuit may resonate to sweep up the voltage supplied to the gas discharge lamp to a voltage higher than said lamp operation voltage.

A high frequency electronic ballast for main loads, such as an HID lamp, includes a regulated low voltage output to drive auxiliary loads. A low voltage microcontroller generates a low voltage drive signal in response to voltage and frequency of a high voltage power supply. A switch operably connected to the high voltage power supply and responsive to the low voltage drive signal provides the regulated low voltage output to drive the auxiliary devices, such as a back-up incandescent lamp and/or an insulation detector. In one embodiment, the low voltage output may be responsive to the HID lamp power, e.g., a control signal from a ballast microcontroller, so that the back-up incandescent lamp is energized when the HID lamp is not providing sufficient illumination.

Bi-state power operation of an HID lamp system. A power mode control selection determined where a high power mode and a low power mode are selectable. A modulation is determined to generate a driving signal based on the determined power mode control selection. A driving signal is generated based on the determined modulation. The generated driving signal is then applied to the HID lamp. A method of operating an HID lamp is also provided. Power is coupled to an HID lamp with a selectable power signal where the power signal is selectable for full power or reduced power operation.

A method for dimming a gas discharge lamp, such as an HID lamp including an MH lamp, includes operating the lamp at nominal power with commutating DC current having a current magnitude I=&#x3b1;I, &#x3b1; being equal to 1 or less than 1. The current magnitude Iis reduced, but the lamp still is operated at commutating DC current, until &#x3b1; reaches a predetermined value &#x3b2;. Then, the lamp is operated at DC current, and the current magnitude is reduced further, thus achieving a lower dimming level.

Method and device for driving a gas discharge lamp

The present invention provides a high frequency electronic ballast with rail voltage switching which adjusts the DC rail voltage output () to account for different voltages of mains power (), improving efficiency. The present invention provides a high frequency electronic ballast with ignition and operation control, and method of use, comprising a ballast microcontroller () responsive to at least one high intensity discharge (HID) lamp feedback signal and generating an HID lamp control signal; a parallel capacitive circuit () operably connected parallel to the HID lamp (); an inductive circuit () operably connected to the parallel capacitive circuit (); means for switching power () to the inductive circuit () in response to the HID lamp control signal; and means for monitoring the HID lamp () to generate at least one high intensity discharge (HID) lamp feedback signal. In one embodiment, the HID lamp feedback signal can be an ignition voltage signal (). In another embodiment, the HID lamp feedback signal can be a sensed rail voltage signal (), a sensed lamp current signal (), and a sensed lamp power signal ().

Electronic ballast with ignition and operation control

A switch mode power supply for igniting and operating a high-pressure gas discharge lamp includes an ignition sub-circuit which is coupled via a transformer to the circuit. The ignition sub-circuit has at least an ignition capacitor, and a switching element for discharging the capacitor at a desired moment in time having a control electrode. The control electrode of the switching element is connected to the commutator of the lamp circuit via a control sub-circuit having substantially passive elements.

Switch mode power supply for a gas discharge lamp

A system and method of controlling power to a high-intensity-discharge lamp is provided. A voltage sensor determines voltage across the lamp. A current sensor determines current through the lamp. A control circuit approximates lamp power based on input from the sensors, compares the lamp power against a desired level, and regulates lamp power based on the comparison.

An improved high frequency ballast is disclosed. The high frequency ballast establishes a lamp current for a gas discharge lamp during a starting operation of the gas discharge lamp wherein an operating ampere level of the lamp current facilitates a substantial achievement by the gas discharge lamp of a color specification associated with the gas discharge lamp. Thereafter, during a stable operation of the gas discharge lamp, the high frequency ballast applies a frequency modulation to an operating frequency of the lamp current and/or an amplitude modulation of the lamp current.

An auxiliary lighting system for a high-intensity discharge lamp. In one embodiment, the auxiliary lighting system has an auxiliary light source, an HID lamp status circuit having an input for connection to a status signal representative of the operational state of a high-intensity discharge lamp wherein the HID lamp status circuit determines whether the status signal meets predetermined signal criteria, a switch circuit having a first state that effects application of a voltage source to the auxiliary light source, and a second state that isolates the voltage source from the auxiliary light source, and a control circuit responsive to the HID lamp status circuit for controlling the switch circuit. The control circuit has a first state when the HID lamp status circuit determines that the status signal meets the predetermined signal criteria and a second state when the HID lamp status circuit determines that the status signal does not meet the predetermined signal criteria. When the control circuit is in the first state, the control circuit outputs a control signal for input into the switch circuit that configures the switch circuit into the first state. When the control circuit is in the second state, the control circuit outputs a control signal for input into the switch circuit that configures the switch circuit into the second state.
