The present disclosure generally relates to a head assembly in a data storage device. The data storage device may include magnetic media embedded in the device or magnetic media from an insertable cassette or cartridge (e.g., in an LTO drive), where the head assembly reads from and writes to the magnetic media. During device operation, the magnetic media moves across the head assembly. The magnetic media experiences higher contact stress at certain points or portions of the head assembly. A sensor guard is coupled to the head assembly. The sensor guard comprises at least one chamfered surface or at least one stepped surface to decrease the contact stress between the magnetic media and the head assembly during device operation. The at least one chamfered or stepped surface may be disposed on a leading edge of the sensor guard.

Reduction of high tape contact pressure points against head assembly

In a tape drive comprising a tape head module, a tape contacts the tape head module during operation. The tape head module comprises a substrate, a plurality of data heads disposed adjacent to the substrate at a media facing surface (MFS), and a closure disposed adjacent to the plurality of data heads. The closure comprises a first side portion disposed at a leading edge, a second side portion disposed at the leading edge, the first and second side portions being recessed from the MFS, and a central portion disposed between the first and second side portions at the leading edge. In some embodiments, the central portion is recessed from the MFS. The central portion may comprise a notch, a taper, or one or more steps. The first and second side portions may be tapered, rounded, or comprise one or more steps to reduce contact of a tape during operation.

The present disclosure is generally related to a tape drive comprising a tape head assembly. The tape head assembly comprises a spring adaptor, the spring adaptor comprising a first hole, a second hole, and a spring member disposed between the first hole and the second hole, a beam disposed within the first hole of the spring adaptor, a first module disposed on the beam, the first module comprising a first plurality of write transducers and a first plurality of read transducers, a second module disposed on the beam adjacent to the first module, the second module comprising a second plurality of write transducers and a second plurality of read transducers, and an actuator disposed in the first hole. The actuator is controllable to move the beam in a direction transverse to a media movement direction. The spring adaptor stabilizes the beam while the beam is being actuated.

The present disclosure relates to pretreating a magnetic recording head. For a HAMR head, a NFT is present. Current can be applied to the NFT to condition the NFT. The current is applied in one of three ways: slowly ramping up the current from a starting level below a level capable of writing data to the optical laser current over a predetermined period of time, applying the current at a fixed value below the optical laser current for the predetermined period of time, or slowly ramping up the current from a starting level below a level capable of writing data to the optical laser current over the predetermined period of time while also intermittently removing the current. By conditioning the NFT in such a manner, the HAMR head can avoid thermal shock and thermal fatigue and thus increase the lifetime of the magnetic media drive.

A magnetic recording head assembly is provided and is configured to read from and write to a magnetic media. The head assembly includes a first module having a first media facing surface (MFS), a first closure, and a first recessed portion disposed between the first MFS and the first closure. The first MFS includes AlTiC. A second module is provided having a second MFS, a second closure, and a second recessed portion disposed between the second MFS and the second closure. The second MFS includes AlTiC. An overcoat disposed within the first and second recessed portions includes an adhesive layer and a protective layer disposed within the first and second recessed portion.

The present disclosure is generally related to a tape head comprising a first module and a second module joined together along a seam. The first module comprises a plurality of data heads disposed in a first row parallel to the seam, and the second module comprises a plurality of data heads disposed in a second row parallel to the first row. The first row and the second row are spaced apart a distance of about 50 &#x3bc;m to about 175 &#x3bc;m. A via is disposed at a media facing surface (MFS) along a portion of the seam. The via has a length less than a width of the MFS and equal to or greater than a length of the first and second rows of data heads. The via is configured to create a vacuum effect to pull a magnetic media against the media facing surface when the tape head reads and writes data to the magnetic media.

The present disclosure is generally related to a tape head assembly narrower than the width of a tape, wherein the tape head assembly comprises one or more heads, wherein each of the one or more heads comprise a curved surface comprising a first beveled wing, a second beveled wing, and a flat-lapped surface disposed between the first beveled wing and the second beveled wing. The first beveled wing and the second beveled wing each comprise outer corners recessed from a top surface of the flat-lapped surface such that there is no interaction between the outer corners of the beveled wings and the tape.

The present disclosure generally relates to a tape head and a tape drive including a tape head. The tape head comprises a first same gap verify (SGV) head assembly comprising a first media facing surface (MFS) and a plurality of first write transducer and first read transducer pairs, and a second SGV head assembly comprising a second MFS and a plurality of second write transducer and second read transducer pairs. During operation, when a tape or magnetic media moves in a first direction over the tape head, the tape contacts the second MFS and is spaced from the first MFS, and when the tape moves in a second direction opposite the first direction over the tape head, the tape contacts the first MFS and is spaced from the second MFS. As such, the tape contacts only one edge of either the first or second MFS during operation.

The present disclosure generally relates to a head assembly of a data storage device. The data storage device may include magnetic media embedded in the device or magnetic media from an insertable cassette or cartridge (e.g., in an LTO drive), where the magnetic head assembly reads from and writes to the magnetic media. During drive operation, the magnetic media moves across the magnetic head assembly. The magnetic head assembly is spaced a distance from the magnetic media such that non-contact recording occurs between the magnetic head assembly and the magnetic media. The magnetic media is supported by either a back plate or an air film generated by one or more fillet edges of the back plate and the velocity of the magnetic media as the magnetic media moves across the magnetic head assembly.

A data storage device configured to access a magnetic tape wound around a first reel and a second reel is disclosed, wherein the data storage device comprises at least one head configured to access the magnetic tape. A distortion of the magnetic tape is measured, and the magnetic tape is rewound so that the first and second reels have a respective first and second radius of the wound magnetic tape based on the measured distortion.

Aspects of the present disclosure generally relate to a base and related methods for write and read heads. In one example, the base and related methods are used as part of a magnetic storage device, for example a magnetic media drive such as a hard disk drive (HDD) or a magnetic tape drive (e.g., a tape embedded drive). The base includes one or more base bodies formed of a ceramic material. Each base body includes an inward surface, an outward surface opposing the inward surface, a lower surface, and an angled upper surface disposed above the lower surface. Each base body includes a vertical opening extending between the upper surface and the lower surface. In one example, two base bodies are bonded together. In one example, the two base bodies combine to form a single base body of the base that is monolithic and unitary.

Disclosed herein is a magnetic storage device that comprises a housing defining an interior cavity. The magnetic storage device also comprises at least one magnetic disk in the interior cavity of the housing. The magnetic storage device further comprises at least one read-write head in the interior cavity and configured to read data from and write data to the magnetic disk. The read-write head comprises a heat-assisted magnetic storage (HAMR) head. The magnetic storage device additionally comprises a gas, comprising oxygen and helium, sealed in the interior cavity of the housing. A percent concentration of oxygen in the gas is greater than or equal to 3%. A pressure of the gas is between 10% and 70%, inclusive, of atmospheric pressure. A relative humidity within the interior cavity is less than 5%, inclusive. A percent concentration of helium in the gas is less than or equal to 90%.

A data storage device is disclosed comprising a head actuated over a disk, wherein the head comprises a laser configured to heat the disk while writing data to the disk. A write power is applied to the laser in order to write data to the disk during a write operation. A determination is made as to whether the laser power should be in an off state after the write operation. After the write operation, the laser power is gradually decreased to the off state based on a first decrease function.
