An annular elastomeric packer for a blowout preventer includes a plurality of circumferentially spaced inserts, wherein at least one of the plurality of inserts includes an upper flange extending between a radially inner end and a radially outer end, a lower flange extending between a radially inner end and a radially outer end, and a rib extending between the upper flange and the lower flange, wherein the upper flange includes an upper surface disposed at an acute angle relative a longitudinal axis of the elastomeric packer, and an elastomeric body coupled to the plurality of inserts and including an inner sealing surface.

Blowout preventer apparatus and method

The present disclosure generally relates to an annular blowout preventer ('BOP') apparatus for sealing a wellbore. In particular, the annular BOP includes a body comprising a vertical bore extending therethrough, an upper packing element located in the body, a lower packing element located in the body and spaced axially from the upper packing element, and a piston configured to move the upper and lower packing elements radially with respect to the vertical bore. The annular BOP provides for bi-directional sealing across the annular BOP. In other embodiments, the annular BOP may include only a single packing element configured to provide for bi-directional sealing across the annular BOP.

Annular blowout preventer apparatus

A blowout preventer ('BOP') includes a housing comprising a vertical bore extending through the housing and a packer assembly movably positioned within the housing and configured to form a seal within the housing. The packer assembly includes an elastomeric body comprising an elastomeric material and inserts positioned within the elastomeric body and in parallel alignment with respect to each other.
