A friction transmission belt includes a belt body, formed of a rubber composition, looped over a pulley, and transmitting power. The friction transmission belt includes a reinforcing fabric wrapping at least a surface, of the belt body, in contact with the pulley. The reinforcing fabric is a knitted fabric, and on the surface of the belt body in contact with the pulley, a wale direction of the reinforcing fabric is a direction in which the friction transmission belt travels.

In a V-ribbed belt, the dimension H from the rib-side end of a tension member to the bottom of a rib is set in the range of 1.0 to 2.0 mm to thicken the bottom side of the belt, thereby reducing a shock as caused when the belt vibrates and strikes a pulley. The dimension H from the rib-side end of the tension member to the top of the rib is set in the range of 3.0 to 4.0 mm or the belt with five ribs is set to exhibit a flexural rigidity of 39.2 N&middot;cm or more when subjected to a flexural rigidity test, thereby enhancing the flexural rigidity of the belt. Alternatively, the belt with five ribs is set to exhibit a dynamic spring constant of 850 N/mm or more when subjected to a dynamic response test, thereby providing a sufficient dynamic spring constant to the belt. Alternatively, the belt with five ribs is set to exhibit a dynamic damping constant of 0.065 N&middot;S/mm or more when subjected to the dynamic response test, thereby providing a sufficient dynamic damping constant to the belt. According to these settings, production of vibration and associated noise during the running of the V-ribbed belt can be suppressed without the need for tension management of the belt and provision of an idler pulley.

V-ribbed belt

A fabric 3 for power transmission belt to be adhered to a belt body 2 of a V-ribbed belt 1 is formed such that carbon fibers with electric conductivity are mixed through spinning into a fabric material such as cotton, nylon and polyester. This prevents the belt from producing a beating sound and producing worn-out dusts in the use as a power transmission belt and enhances the electric conductivity of the power transmission belt to successfully prevent electrostatic charge of the belt.

A canvas of a power transmission belt has an abutting joint part seamed by a sewing machine. A machine sewing thread of the abutting joint part is adhered to the canvas beforehand by adhesive treatment so as not to separate from the canvas. Accordingly, the machine sewing thread does not float off from the canvas at reverse flex. Thus, friction noise and vibration due to interference of the machine sewing thread with a pulley at meshing at reverse flex are prevented.
