A color conversion adjustment method is provided which enables correct judgment on a fine gray balance. In a process of adjusting or confirming gray correction conversion for correcting a gray balance, a plurality of color patches, whose gray balances are varied discretely, are lined up, and a gray correction chart, whose background portion other than the color patches is outputted at a black color of a predetermined density, is outputted. The black color of the background portion is a standard for judging the color balance. Because the color patches and the black color are printed on the same paper, there is no deterioration in the gray balance due to differences in papers, and accordingly, fine gray balance can be judged more accurately.

The diffusion error signal .DELTA.E(x,y) is added to the multi-valued image signal I.sub.0 (x,y), producing-a corrected multi-valued image signal I(x,y), which is then compared with the threshold signal TH by the comparator to generate a binary image signal P(x,y).

When threshold data of a threshold matrix are to be established, they are determined in an ascending or descending order so as to maximize the distance between the thresholds in the threshold matrix and other identical threshold matrixes positioned in surrounding relation thereto. After all the thresholds are established, multivalued image data are converted into binary image data using the threshold matrix. A halftone dot image produced on the basis of the binary image data is of a highly accurate nature free from dot gains.

The diffusion error signal .DELTA.E(x,y) is added to the multi-valued image signal I.sub.0 (x,y), producing a corrected multi-valued image signal I(x,y), which is then compared with the threshold signal TH by the comparator to generate a binary image signal P(x,y).

According to this invention, a sharpness emphasis is carried out by multiplying a sharpness emphasis signal of an original image by a function of a look-up table which is accessed based on an output from an edge detecting filter performing detections in accordance with only the edge portions of the original image. Since the edge detecting filter for detecting edges of the image is equipped in order to emphasize the sharpness only in the edge portions of the image, it is possible to prevent the image grains from being sharpness-emphasized. In addition, although the edge detecting filter may have a same size of a mask with that of the unsharpness mask, it is possible, if required, to modify freely both sizes of the masks, in order to perform a proper process in accordance with each image variation.

To obtain a binary gradation image from a continuous gradation image, a multi-valued image signal I(x,y) is compared with a threshold signal TH by a comparator to produce a binary image signal P(x,y), an error signal E(x,y) is determined from the binary image signal P(x,y) and the multi-valued image signal I(x,y), and the error signal E(x,y) is multiplied by an error diffusion coefficient W(k,l) to produce a diffusion error signals .DELTA.E(x,y). A random number R(x,y) generated by a random number generator and a weighting coefficient f(I(x,y)) generated as a function of an image signal by a weighting coefficient generator are multiplied, and the product is added to the diffusion error signals .DELTA.E(x,y). The sum is added to the multi-valued image signal I(x,y) thereby to produce a corrected multi-valued image signal I(x,y), which is then compared with the threshold signal TH by the comparator thereby generating a binary image signal P(x,y).
