This application discloses an active-matrix display device capable of providing satisfactory display free from display irregularities on a non-rectangular display portion, such as a notched display portion, while avoiding an increased circuit scale and other adverse factors. In such an active-matrix liquid crystal display device including a notched display portion, pulses of gate clock signals GCK and GCKB corresponding to pulses of scanning signals are subjected to waveform rounding in accordance with time constants of scanning signal lines to which the scanning signals are to be applied. As a result, the waveforms of all scanning signals to be applied to the scanning signal lines are rounded to almost the same degree. Thus, each pixel forming portion is approximately equal in pixel voltage reduction amount &#x394;Vp upon turning off of a pixel switching element.

Active matrix substrate, display apparatus, and method for producing the same

A liquid crystal display apparatus and a data driver of the present invention is provided with a sampling pulse generating circuit. The sampling pulse generating circuit is provided with a shift register for shift operation having a plurality of set-reset type flip-flops, and analog switches whose opening and closing of each analog switch is controlled in response to each output of the respective flip-flops so that a clock signal is outputted during the opening as a sampling pulse. Sampling of the image signal is carried out in accordance with the sampling pulses. The pulse width of the sampling pulse varies depending on the duty ratio of the clock signal, thereby ensuring to avoid that active periods of the adjoining sampling pulses overlap with each other.

In a level shift circuit, a bias voltage setting section sets the voltage level of swing of an input signal IN, while an amplifier circuit section amplifies the amplitude of the input signal IN. This arrangement needs only one input signal without its inverted signal and allows the level shift circuit to be monolithically formed on a substrate identical to that of another drive circuit. This further obviates the need for adjusting the bias voltage every image display device using this level shift circuit.

A voltage output circuit has decoders, a selecting circuit, a logical circuit and an output circuit in order to select one of plural gradation power source lines for a prescribed period based upon k bits and m bits of an n-bit digital signal. The k bits of the digital signal are converting into 2.sup.k decoded signals by one decoder, and another m bits are converted into 2.sup.m decoded signals by the other decoder. The selecting circuit generates a signal for selecting one of periods which were obtained by dividing one horizontal scanning period into 2.sup.k based upon k-numbered timing signals by using the 2.sup.k decoded signals. The logical circuit generates 2.sup.n signals composed of combinations of the signals from the selecting circuit and the 2.sup.m decoded signals. Moreover, one of the 2.sup.m gradation power source lines is selected by an output switch by using the signal from the logical circuit. As a result, in an image display device using a digital signal as an input video signal, a number of gradation power source lines is reduced and the arrangement of driving circuits is simplified without deteriorating display quality. As a result, a cost of the image display device can be lowered.

A driving circuit in a matrix type image display apparatus including a plurality of groups each including four standard unit circuits and one backup unit circuit. Each standard unit circuit includes disconnecting means for isolating the standard unit circuit from the driving circuit, and the backup unit circuit includes connecting means for connecting the backup unit circuit to an input signal line and an output signal line of any of the standard unit circuits within a group. The number of the backup unit circuits can be changed in accordance with a conforming ratio of each unit circuit, which makes it possible to eliminate idle backup unit circuits while maintaining a high overall conforming ratio of the driving circuit, thereby enhancing manufacturing efficiencies and reducing manufacturing costs.

A TFT circuit according to the present invention includes a first transistor and a second transistor both formed on an insulating substrate. The first transistor has a channel region comprising a polycrystalline silicon film to which a metal element for enhancing crystallization is added. A liquid crystal display device includes pixels, arranged in a two-dimensional matrix on a substrate, for displaying an image, and several types of transistors, fabricated monolithically on the substrate for driving the respective pixels. One transistor in each pixel is juxtaposed on a periphery section of an adjacent pixel. By sharing such sections between adjacent pixels the fabrication of the transistors is simplified with the area occupied by each transistor and the pixel size reduced.

A driving circuit for use in a display apparatus for transmitting a video signal to data lines includes a plurality of shift registers; a control signal generating circuit for outputting a control signal which is at the ON level during a period shorter than a pulse width of signals outputted by the shift registers; a switching circuit controlled to be ON or OFF based on the control signal; and a sampling capacitor for holding the video signal sampled by the switching circuit. In such a driving circuit, the plurality of shift registers sequentially output signals so that the periods in which the signals are high are partially overlapped sequentially. The control signal generating circuit outputs a control signal which is at the On level during a period shorter than the signals from the shift registers. Since the switching circuit is controlled to be ON or OFF based on the control signal, a period in which the switching circuit is conductive is short. Accordingly, the number of such switching circuits which are simultaneously conductive is small, thereby applying a capacitance of only a small number of capacitors to a video signal line.
