If the temperature (Tig) of a switching element () in a source power supply circuit () of an electric motor () increases to be equal to or greater than a first predetermined value (&#x3b1;) while an electric vehicle () is in a stall state, a torque command for the electric motor () is reduced while a braking force command for a brake unit () is increased, and if the temperature (Tig) of the switching element () subsequently decreases to be equal to or less than a second predetermined value (&#x3b2;(&#x3c;&#x3b1;)), the braking force command for the brake unit () is decreased while the torque command for the electric motor () is increased. The increment rate of the torque command for the electric motor () is varied in accordance with the degree of road gradient.

The smaller of a rear drive command R_PowCmd (which is set depending on the running state of the vehicle) and a rear output power limit R_LimPow is set as a new rear drive command R_PowCmd. Accordingly, a demanded motor output power can be obtained without increasing the size of the main battery ().

Power control apparatus for hybrid vehicle

An engine is connected to front wheels via a primary motor, a clutch and a transmission, and a secondary motor is connected to rear wheels. A vehicle is driven by the secondary motor while performing a combustion suspended idle operating condition in which the engine which has been brought to a combustion suspended condition is run idly by the primary motor according to driving conditions of the vehicle. The necessity for idling the engine is obviated so as to reduce the fuel consumption. A hybrid vehicle comprises an engine and a motor as power sources, the output power of at least one of the engine and the motor being transmitted to driving wheels for driving the hybrid vehicle, an accelerator pedal for increasing and decreasing driving power of the hybrid vehicle, and a drive control section which is provided for operating and stopping the engine and the motor, and which is adapted to control the engine and the motor in such a manner that when the engine is stopped and the motor is operated solely for driving the hybrid vehicle, change in desired output power is predicted, and the engine is maintained to be stopped, even when the predicted output power falls in a drive zone in which the engine is supposed to be operated, when the movement of the accelerator pedal in a predetermined period is less than a predetermined amount, and that the motor is controlled so as to output the predicted output power for continuing drive of the vehicle solely by the motor.

When a hybrid vehicle picks up speed, the torque of a first motor is gradually reduced based on a vehicle speed before the vehicle speed reaches a vehicle speed threshold. When the vehicle speed is equal to or greater than the vehicle speed threshold, the torque of the first motor is reduced to zero. If the vehicle speed is equal to or greater than the vehicle speed threshold, then a third clutch connected to the first motor is disengaged.

A control device for a hybrid vehicle which comprises an engine and a motor-generator that is capable of generating electrical power as power sources, and in which the power of at least one of the engine and the motor-generator is transmitted to an output shaft for driving the hybrid vehicle. Eight storage battery cells 11.sub.1 to 11.sub.8 making up a storage battery cell group 2 can be connected selectively to a voltage-correcting storage battery 12 through nine cell change-over switches 13.sub.1 to 13.sub.9, four polarity-inverting switches 14.sub.1 to 14.sub.4 and a current-limiting resistor 15. When the voltages of two or more of the storage battery cells 11.sub.1 to 11.sub.8 are different, the voltages of each of the storage battery cells 11.sub.1 to 11.sub.8 can be equalized by then transferring the charge from a storage battery cell high in voltage to the voltage-correcting storage battery 12 and by transferring the charge of that voltage-correcting storage battery 12 to a storage battery cell low in voltage. As a result, the voltage difference due to the performance variations among the individual storage battery cells 11.sub.1 to 11.sub.8 can be obviated thereby to increase the working voltage range of the storage battery cell group 2 as a whole.
