The present invention relates to a reformed gas production apparatus that includes a reaction chamber containing a reforming catalyst, a supply route to the reaction chamber, a reformed gas conduction route from the reaction chamber, and a reaction chamber temperature control means that controls a temperature of the reaction chamber. The supply route supplies a fluid that includes a fuel containing a hydrocarbon having at least two carbon atoms, at least one of steam and a carbon dioxide-containing gas, and an oxygen-containing gas. The fuel can be a mixed fuel that includes a plurality of types of hydrocarbons that each have at least two carbon atoms. The reaction chamber temperature control means relates to the thermal decomposition index temperature of the fuel, which defines an upper limit temperature of the reforming reaction region.

Reformed gas production method and reformed gas production apparatus

The invention provides a method for operating a reformed gas production apparatus with which it is possible to achieve a high reforming efficiency while preventing a drop in catalyst activity due to the deposition of carbon. The reformed gas production method uses a reforming catalyst to reform a fuel that contains a hydrocarbon having at least two carbon atoms to produce a reformed gas that includes methane, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide. With this method, a fluid that includes the fuel, at least one of steam and a carbon dioxide-containing gas, and an oxygen-containing gas, is supplied to a reforming reaction region, and with the thermal decomposition index temperature of the fuel, which is determined by the type and the concentration of the hydrocarbons having at least two carbon atoms that make up the fuel, serving as an upper limit temperature of the reforming reaction region, the fluid is brought into contact with the reforming catalyst to produce the reformed gas.

A desulfurizing agent is produced by mixing a copper compound, a zinc compound and an ammonium compound with an aqueous solution of an alkali substance to prepare or precipitate followed by calcitrating the resulting precipitate to form a calcined precipitate into a shape form of a copper oxide-zinc oxide-aluminum oxide mixture. The shaped form is impregnated with iron or nickel and calcined to produce a calcined oxide and reduced with hydrogen to form a sulfur-absorption desulfurizing agent.

The object of the present invention is to obtain a carbon-monoxide removing technique capable of very effectively reducing/removing carbon monoxide present at one thousand of ppm to several % in a hydrogen-rich treatment-object gas such as a reformed gas obtained by reforming of a fuel such as natural gas, methanol, etc. to a concentration of several tens of ppm (preferably 10 ppm) or lower without excessive loss of hydrogen, even when carbon dioxide, methane are co-existent For accomplishing this object, there are provided two stages of CO removers for removing carbon monoxide from a hydrogen-containing treatment-object gas, the first-stage CO remover removing a portion of the carbon monoxide by methanation thereof through a catalyst reaction, the second-stage CO remover removing the remaining portion of the carbon monoxide mainly by oxidation thereof through a further catalyst reaction involving addition of an oxidizing agent.

In a method of manufacturing a copper-zinc-aluminum-based methanol reforming catalyst by coprecipitation, the methanol reforming catalyst is obtained by using a copper compound, a zinc compound and aluminum hydroxide, mixing them with an alkaline substance to produce a precipitate, calcining the precipitate obtained, and reducing the calcined product. Thus, a method is provided for manufacturing a highly active, highly heat resistant and durable methanol reforming catalyst which can be used for a long time even under reaction conditions of 300&#xb0; C. and higher.

In a gas sensor which uses CuO as a p-type semiconductor, by adding Na.sub.2 CO.sub.3 in excess of 1 wt % relative to CuO, sensitivity to gases such as H.sub.2, NO, NO.sub.2 and SO.sub.2 is suppressed, whereby selectivity for CO is increased. Sensitivity to CO.sub.2 can also be obtained. In addition, by adding a sodium salt of tungstic acid or molybdic acid, CO.sub.2 sensitivity can be made lower than the CO sensitivity, and CO gas in the exhaust gases discharged from gas-fired water heaters or other combustion equipment can be selectively detected. It is therefore possible to detect incomplete combustion.

The present invention relates to a process for the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides contained in exhaust gases from combustion, which process comprises bringing said exhaust gases into contact with a Beta Zeolite exchanged with suitable amounts of cobalt salts, in the presence of a light hydrocarbon as the reducing agent. The present invention relates also to a catalyst for such a process, which catalyst comprises a Beta Zeolite exchanged with cobalt salts, characterized by a Co:zeolite Al molar ratio of &lt;0.5.

The present invention relates to a process for the catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides contained in exhaust gases from combustion, which process comprises bringing said exhaust gases into contact with a Beta Zeolite exchanged with suitable amounts of cobalt salts, in the presence of a light hydrocarbon as the reducing agent. The present invention relates also to a catalyst for such a process, which catalyst comprises a Beta zeolite exchanged with cobalt salts, characterized by a Co: zeolite AL molar ratio of&lt;0.5.

Gas sensors and their manufacturing methods

In a fuel cell power generation system for use with a fuel gas which is prepared by desulfurizing a raw fuel material such as naphtha, LPG, town gas, or the like and then, processing it by steam reforming reaction and thus, consists mainly of hydrogen or a process of producing the fuel gas, the desulfurization of the raw fuel material is implemented using a copper/zinc desulfurizing agent. As a result of the desulfurization, the raw fuel material is desulfurized at a higher level and the deterioration of a steam reforming catalyst employed is prevented. Accordingly, steady long-run operation of the fuel cell will be ensured. Also, upon the steam reforming reaction, the S/C (the mole number of steam per one mole of carbon in a raw fuel material) is reduced and thus, the concentration of hydrogen in the fuel gas will be increased providing an improvement in the efficiency of power generation.
