A friction material comprising a fibrous reinforcement, a friction modifier, and a binder. An abrasive component of the friction material includes non-fibrous particulate matters having the same material as fibrous matters of rock wool, slag wool, and ceramics including Al O &mdash;SiO as a main component, but the fibrous matters are not contained.
