In a semiconductor device manufacturing method capable of manufacturing semiconductor lasers, light emitting diodes or electron transport devices using nitride III-V compound semiconductors with a high productivity, a GaN semiconductor laser wafer is prepared in which a plurality of semiconductor lasers are formed on an AlGaInN semiconductor layer on a c-face sapphire substrate and separated from each other by grooves deep enough to reach the c-face sapphire substrate, and a p-side electrode and an n-side electrode are formed in each semiconductor laser. The GaN semiconductor laser wafer is bonded to a photo-diode built-in Si wafer having formed a photo diode for monitoring light outputs and solder electrodes in each pellet by positioning the p-side electrode and the n-side electrode in alignment with the solder electrodes, respectively. After that, by lapping the c-face sapphire substrate from its bottom surface deep enough to reach the grooves or by dicing the c-face sapphire substrate from its bottom surface, the semiconductor lasers on the photo-diode built-in Si wafer are separated from each other. After that, the photo-diode built-in Si wafer is divided by dicing into discrete pellets. A GaN semiconductor laser chip, thus obtained, is assembled on a package.

A confocal scanning microscope can process two-dimensional or third-dimensional optical information at high speed and can be simplified in arrangement. The confocal scanning microscope includes an optical coupling device array composed of a plurality of optical coupling devices arranged on a common substrate in a one-dimensional or two-dimensional fashion, and an objective lens, wherein each of the optical coupling devices has light-emitting portion and a light-receiving portion closley disposed on the common substrate, and reflected-back light obtained from a target object after light emitted from the light-emitting portion has been reflected on the target object is received and detected near a confocal position by the light-receiving portion.

A print head, printer and recording method wherein dye recording materials 22Y, 22M, 22C are irradiated by a laser beam L or the like so as to vaporize them, and transport them to a recording medium such as an imaging paper, and the path of a beam from a heating beam emitting means, for example a laser 18, is changed so as to selectively cause the beam to impinge on one of the plurality of recording materials. By using the same heating beam emitting means for the plurality of recording materials, the structure of the head comprising the heating beam emitting means is simplified and its assembly is easier. Moreover, as a common heating beam emitting means may be used, its manufacture is easy, and the electrode wiring in the heating beam emitting means is easily implemented.

An optical device for detecting a magneto-optical signal can be simplified and miniaturized in arrangement. An optical device for detecting a magneto-optical signal includes an optical element in which a light-emitting portion and a light receiving portion are closely disposed on a common substrate and in which reflected-back light obtained from a magneto-optical medium after light from the light-emitting portion was reflected on the magneto-optical medium is detected at a position near confocal position by the light receiving portion and another light receiving element. The reflected-back light from the magneto-optical medium is divided. One reflected-back light is detected by the light receiving portion of the optical element and the other reflected-back light is detected by another light receiving element.

Light is emitted from a light-emitting element toward an irradiated medium, and returning light reflected by the irradiated medium is diffracted by a hologram device. A polarizer polarizes the light diffracted by the hologram device to produce first polarized light that has passed through the polarizer and second polarized light that has been reflected by the polarizer. The first polarized light is detected by a first light-detecting element, and the second polarized light is detected by a second light-detecting element. A magnetooptical signal is generated as the difference between the intensities of the first and second polarized lights which are detected respectively by the first and second light-detecting elements.

A recording unit structure comprising a recording material layer faced to a recording body with a space incorporated therebetween, so that said recording material is vaporized and transferred to said recording body through said space, provided that pores are provided to a vaporizing portion of the recording material in such a manner that the pores be present within the layer of the recording material. Light emitted from the light emitting section (1) is passed through a path of the same axis and photosensed by the photosensor section (4) as shown by a one-dot chain line (a) representing the optical axis before and after the emitted light is reflected by the radiated section (2).

Thus, the reflected-back light from the magneto-optical medium (34) can be received and detected by the light-receiving portion (5) on the optical element (101).

An optical device for detecting a magneto-optical signal includes an optical element in which a light-emitting portion and a light receiving portion are closely disposed on a common substrate and in which reflected-back light obtained from a magneto-optical medium after light from the light-emitting portion was reflected on the magneto-optical medium is detected at a position near confocal position by the light receiving portion and another light receiving element. The reflected-back light from the magneto-optical medium is divided. One reflected-back light is detected by the light receiving portion of the optical element 1 and the other reflected-back light is detected by another light receiving element.

A semiconductor laser and an optical device employing the semiconductor laser are described. The semiconductor laser comprises and activating layer; first and second cladding layers for sandwiching the activating layer, the energy gaps of which are greater than that of the activating layer; a current blocking layer provided in contact with both sides of the activating layer; a first electrode electrically connected to the first cladding layer; and a second electrode electrically connected to the second cladding layer. The activating layer has a structure that the activating layer is two-dimensionally confined within the first cladding layer, the second cladding layer, and the current blocking layer, reflectivity of at least on end face of a resonator of the activating layer is less than, or equal to 5%, and loss in the resonator of the activating layer is higher than, or equal to 100 cm.sup.-3.
