A paper sheets pre-processing apparatus of an embodiment includes a large band remover, a small bundle coupler, a small band remover and an accumulator. The large band remover conveys a bundle in which a plurality of paper sheets are bound by small bands and a predetermined number of small bundles are bound by a large band, and removes the large band from the bundle. The small bundle coupler conveys the predetermined number of small bundles included in the bundle from which the large band is removed by the large band remover, and couples the predetermined number of small bundles to each other. The small band remover separates a single small bundle from the small bundles coupled by the small bundle coupler and removes the small band from the small bundle. The accumulator accumulates the paper sheets from which the small band is removed by the small band remover.

Article sorting apparatus

An article sorting apparatus includes a conveyance path, a conveyor cell, a loading device, a positioning device, a sorting unit and a control device. The conveyor cell moves along the conveyance path in a first conveyance direction and conveys an article loaded thereon in a second conveyance direction that intersects the first conveyance direction. The loading device loads the article onto the conveyor cell. The positioning device is located opposite the loading device with respect to the conveyance path. The positioning device includes a contact member and a driving unit. The driving unit drives the contact member in the second conveyance direction and brings it into contact with the article loaded onto the conveyor cell. The sorting unit receives the article conveyed by the conveyor cell. The control device controls conveyance of the article in the second conveyance direction. The control device controls the driving unit of the positioning device.

This invention provides a reflective mask blank capable of preventing peeling-off of a multilayer reflective film due to cleaning or the like in a mask manufacturing process or during mask use. According to one embodiment, an article sorting apparatus includes a conveyance path extending in a first conveyance direction, the conveyance path having a curve; a conveyance unit that moves along the conveyance path and conveys an article loaded on the conveyance unit in a second conveyance direction that intersects the first conveyance direction of the conveyance path; a loading portion that loads the article onto the conveyance unit; a sorting portion that sorts the article conveyed by the conveyance unit; and a controller that controls movement of the conveyance unit in the first conveyance direction and conveyance of the article in the second conveyance direction and controls the conveyance unit before entry of the conveyance unit into the curve such that if the curve has a curvature radius that is less than a predetermined threshold value, the position of the article on a load surface of the conveyance unit on which the article is placed is adjusted to a position that is offset from a middle position on the load surface to an inward side with respect to a radial direction of the curve.

In a method of manufacturing an optical waveguide by the use of a substrate which has a first ion of a first refractive index and primary and secondary surfaces, an optical passage is formed in the substrate by diffusing through the primary surface a second ionizable species of a second refractive index greater than the first refractive index. A diffusion-accelerator layer is deposited on the secondary surface to accelerate diffusion of secondary ions resulting from the second ionizable species. To this end, the diffusion-accelerator layer is composed of an additional ionizable species which is formed into additional ions able to react with the first ions. Such reaction of the additional ions with the first ions lends itself to reduce the amount of the first ions in the substrate and to promote diffusion of the second ions into the substrate.

In a method of manufacturing an optical waveguide which comprises a substrate having a first refractive index and a light-transmitting passage which is buried into the substrate and which is formed by an ionizable substance having a second refractive index greater than the first refractive index, the ionizable substance is diffused into the substrate from an overlying layer through a diffusion-suppressing layer by impressing a positive polarity of a d.c. voltage and forms a diffused region. Thereafter, the ionizable substance is partially released from the diffused region towards the overlying layer by impressing a negative polarity of the d.c. voltage. A configuration of the diffused region is thus controlled during impression of the negative polarity of the d.c. voltage and formed into the light-transmitting passage.

A waveguide laser medium having an optical waveguide, which is used for effecting light amplification or laser oscillation and is formed by performing the ion exchange of alkaline ions contained in a predetermined portion of a laser glass substrate, which includes the alkaline ions and laser active ions, for another kind of ions, which operate to increase the refractive index of the laser glass, thereby making the refractive index of the predetermined portion become higher than that of the other portions of the laser glass substrate. Further, the laser glass substrate is made of, for example, phosphate glass containing neodymium ions as the laser active ions and further containing 0.01.about.8.0 mol % of Na.sub.2 O, from which Na.sup.+ ions are obtained as the alkaline ions, and the ion operating to increase the refractive index of the predetermined portion is Ag.sup.+ ions. Such a waveguide laser medium is employed in a waveguide laser. Thereby, the ion exchange can be efficiently performed without the occurrence of a crack in the laser glass substrate and so on. Furthermore, light amplification, as well as laser oscillation, can be efficiently performed.
