A multineedle sewing machine is provided with a needle bar and a threading bar supported for turning about its axis and for vertical movement in parallel to the needle bar fixedly provided at its lower end with a hook holding member. A threading hook member is supported on the hook holding member so as to be movable in directions perpendicular to the axis of the threading bar in a plane. The position of the threading hook member relative to the threading bar can be changed by turning a lever. A positioning cam having a cam surface provided with positioning recesses is provided for turning on the threading bar near the upper end of the same, and a pin fixed to the threading bar is in egagement with the cam surface of the positioning cam. When the lever is turned, the positioning cam is turned to determine the vertical position of the threading bar selectively and, at the same time, a radius changing lever is turned to change the radius of turning of the threading hook member.

In threading an eyelet of a looper of a sewing machine, a slide member is displaced until a positioning portion of the slide member comes into contact with the looper. In this contact condition, a thread pushing projection for pushing a looper thread is displaced to penetrate into the eyelet of the looper so that the looper thread pushed by the thread pushing projection passes through the eyelet of the looper. The looper thread having passed through the eyelet is grasped by a grasping portion of the slide member. Thereafter, the thread pushing projection is retracted from the eyelet of the looper, and the slide member is returned to an original position, thus completing the threading operation.

An automatic bobbin thread guiding apparatus in combination with a sewing machine has a work supporting bed, a throat plate, a shuttle race slide and a horizontally rotating shuttle. A bobbin thread holding assembly is provided between the shuttle race slide and the rotating shuttle, for clamping and carrying the bobbin thread end, and is operatively connected with the slide. A bobbin thread engagement guiding mechanism is provided for guiding the bobbin thread catching portion of the assembly so as to make the bobbin thread engage automatically with the bobbin thread tension adjusting mechanism in the rotating shuttle when the assembly is driven backward, and then to hold the catching portion at a given position for making the bobbin thread intersect with the needle thread loop when the assembly reached its rear end position.

A sewing machine has a retractable handwheel which is always biased toward the outside of the frame by a resilient member. When pushed into the frame against the biasing action of the resilient member, the handwheel is locked in a retracted position in the frame by an actuating member. The handwheel is released in conjunction with operation for opening a cover covering the spool chamber of the sewing machine to allow the handwheel to be projected outwardly of the frame, so that the manual rotation of the handwheel may be effected.

A trimming device for sewing machines to trim the marginal edge of work fabric by a cooperation of a stationary blade fixed to the end of a projection arm, and a movable blade fixed to a drive arm positioned above the stationary blade. Between the projection arm and the stationary blade, is a gap for permitting the movable blade to move thereinto. The free end of a resilient plate, which is fixed at its base end portion to the projection arm, normally is substantially in the same horizontal plane as the end of the cutting edge of the stationary blade so as to cover and close the gap. The resilient plate is adapted to be contacted by the movable blade as the latter is lowered to be resiliently deflected into the gap and resume its original position as the movable plate is returned upward, thereby preventing the trimmings from coming into the gap.

Disclosed is a sewing machine attachment which is adapted to be detachably attached, after opening a part of a machine bed, to the portion of the machine bed in the vicinity of the opened part, and to be operatively connected to a motion mechanism in the machine bed through the opened part of the machine bed. The attachment actuating mechanism includes a connection arm which is adapted to extend through the opened part of the machine bed into engagement with the motion mechanism in the machine bed, when a lock lever is moved to a position for locking the attachment to the machine bed. The connection arm is further adapted to be disengaged from the motion mechanism in the machine bed, as the lock lever is moved back to a position for releasing the attachment from the machine bed.

Disclosed is a zigzag sewing machine in which a trimming device for trimming the marginal edge of a work fabric is removably disposed at a predetermined position on a machine bed so that the trimming device is driven in relation to the operation of the sewing machine. The zigzag sewing machine comprises a switching device for changing the field position of the needle oscillation and an operated member for actuating the switching device in relation to the disposition of the trimming device at the predetermined position. In this zigzag sewing machine, while overedge stitching is performed by using the trimming device, the field position of the needle oscillation is set so that zigzag stitches having a desired stitch width are always placed along and over the marginal edge of the work fabric trimmed by the trimming device.
