A low-cost and small-size image reader incorporating a variable power function. An original document is irradiated with the light from a light source. The light is reflected in a reading position. The reflected light is incident on a mirror block via a fixed mirror. The light incident on the mirror block is deflected by a pair of mirrors. An optical path is thus extended and shortened in its length without taking a space in the horizontal directions of the reader. The mirror block and the lens are provided with driving devices. The mirror block and the lens are moved to adjust a focal point and a magnification.

Image reader

A lamp in which a stable, long-term luminous operation can be accomplished is achieved by the fact that, in a mercury lamp of the short arc type in which a cathode and an anode located next to one another within an arc tube and in which both ends of the arc tube are provided with hermetically sealed portions, the cathode is installed on the tip of a rod-shaped component which extends from a respective one of the hermetically sealed portions, the cathode having a greater outer diameter than the rod-shaped component on which it is installed, and the rear end of the cathode tapering toward the respective hermetically sealed portion.

High power mercury lamp of the short arc type with specific cathode

An illumination device for an image input device includes a cylindrical light guiding unit, a board having a plurality of light emitting diode elements, a connection member connecting the light guiding unit with the board and a terminal reflection member formed at one end of the light guiding unit. A surface of the light guiding unit has a scattering reflection member extending linearly along the axial direction of the light guiding unit. A cylindrical reflection member is spaced around the light guiding unit and a linear space is provided in the reflection member along the axial direction of the guiding unit.

Illumination device

A semiconductor exposure device having excellent throughput using a mercury lamp as an exposure light source. The mercury lamp is capable of providing an efficient i-ray output, with a small i-ray half width value, allowing correction of chromatic aberration. The semiconductor exposure device is further provided with an illumination optical system for illuminating a target surface and a projection optical system for projecting the image on the target surface. The illumination optical system is provided with the mercury lamp, an optical integrator, an optical system for guiding a flux of light emitted from the mercury lamp to the optical integrator and a condenser lens for converging the light from the optical integrator. The semiconductor exposure device is provided with a power source and an associated control circuit for supplying an electric current to the mercury lamp. The power source is configured to allow the mercury lamp to have an average electric field E satisfying the following relational expression with respect to the lamp input power W.sub.L (W), provided that the value obtained by deducting 11 V from the lamp voltage V.sub.L (V) of the mercury lamp and dividing the difference by the electrode-to-electrode distance d (mm) is the average electric field E (=V.sub.L -11/d) (V/mm):

Semiconductor exposure device

An image reading device includes a planar light source having sufficiently even illumination to allow accurate shading correction to be performed regardless of the position in the auxiliary scanning direction. The image reading device includes a light source, a photoelectric conversion device, a movement device and a computer. The planar light source includes a rod-shaped light-emitting device and a light-guiding plate that receives light from the rod-shaped light-emitting device and emits light from a single surface. The rod-shaped light-emitting device is at least along one lengthwise side of the light-guiding plate. The photoelectric conversion device converts the image into an electrical image signal which is processed by the computer. The movement device moves the photoelectric conversion device in the auxiliary scanning direction, which is substantially perpendicular to the longer lengthwise side of the photoelectric conversion device and substantially perpendicular to the longer lengthwise side of the rod-shaped light-emitting device.

Planar light source and image reading device

A mercury lamp of the short arc type in which tantalum can absorb impurity gases to a sufficient degree even if the inside of the arc tube reaches a high temperature is achieved by providing an arc tube, within which mercury and an inert gas are encapsulated, with a pair of electrodes disposed opposite each other within the arc tube, each of the electrodes being supported by a respective terminal post, tantalum being provided on the terminal post of one of the electrodes, and by ensuring that both of the relationships (D2/D1)&gt;1.3 and the relationship 0.2.ltoreq.(D2/D1).sup.2 /L.ltoreq.0.5 are satisfied at the same time, where D1 is an outer diameter of the terminal post in millimeters, D2 is an outer diameter of the electrode supported by the respective terminal post in millimeters, and L is a distance between a tip of the electrode on which the tantalum is provided and the tantalum on the terminal post of that electrode.

An imaging apparatus comprising imaging devices for converting the light of a subject into electric signals, an image forming device for forming an image of the light of the subject on the imaging devices and a connecting device for connecting the image forming device to the imaging devices. In the imaging apparatus, the connecting device has at least three pins so inserted in holes bored in either the imaging devices or the image forming device as to be vertically movable and a biasing device for making the pins contact with a confronting surface of the image device or the image forming device. Heads of the pins are formed in configuration adaptive to point-contact with the confronting surface. The hole is bonded to the pin, and the pin is bonded to the confronting surface, respectively.

Imaging apparatus with CCD holders

A small-size discharge lamp includes a glass tube having first and second ends, with an outer diameter thereof being smaller than 5 millimeters and a length thereof being shorter than 300 millimeters. At opposite ends of the glass tube, an elongated filament and an elongated getter are provided adjacent each other and parallel to the axial direction of the glass tube.
