A fuel cell system includes a fuel cell a current sensor that detects a current of the fuel cell, a plurality of cell voltage sensors that detects a voltage in a unit of one or two or more cells of the fuel cell among the cells, a pump that adjusts a flow rate of the cooling medium, and a controller. The controller estimates, in a first case, a calorific value of the fuel cell using each detected cell voltage value and the detected current value, decides the flow rate of the cooling medium based on the estimated calorific value, and controls the operation of the pump such that the flow rate of the cooling medium is lower than that of a case where the estimated calorific value is the same in a normal operation of the fuel cell.

A fuel cell system includes a fuel cell including an electrolyte membrane, a sensor configured to measure a temperature of the fuel cell, and a controller. The controller is configured to cause the fuel cell to perform a wet operation to increase a water balance at a cathode of the fuel cell to a value higher than a water balance at the cathode during a normal operation of the fuel cell, when the temperature of the fuel cell measured by the sensor is maintained at a first threshold temperature or higher for a prescribed period of time or longer and then the temperature of the fuel cell decreases to below a second threshold temperature that is equal to or lower than the first threshold temperature.

A fuel cell stack comprises a stack of three or more fuel cells, each having an assembly in which an anode electrode and a cathode electrode are respectively joined to either side of an electrolytic membrane. The anode electrode is provided nearer to one end, in the stack direction of the fuel cell, than the cathode electrode. Temperature regulating parts for regulating the temperature of the anode electrode of one fuel cell of any two adjacent fuel cells and the cathode electrode of the other fuel cell are disposed at a plurality of positions arranged in the stack direction. The provided temperature regulating parts perform temperature regulation so that the heat dissipating capability of the anode electrode is different in the stack direction from that of the cathode electrode.
