A cutting insert has two opposing end surfaces interconnected by a peripheral side surface, the peripheral side surface having two major side surfaces and two minor side surfaces. Major edges are formed at the intersection of the major side surfaces and the end surfaces. Each end surface has two diagonally opposed raised corners and two diagonally opposed lowered corners with respect to a median plane, each raised corner adjoining one of the major edges at a first major point and each lowered corner adjoining one of the major edges at a third major point. In a major side view, each major edge has an associated first imaginary straight line containing its first and third major points, and an elevated edge portion located on one side of the first imaginary straight line. The cutting insert is removably secured in a rotary cutting tool.

A high-feed milling tool assembly includes a tool and a ramping insert. The ramping insert includes ramping, feed and side sub-edges. The ramping and feed sub-edges are longer than the side sub-edges and converge with increasing proximity to the side sub-edge to which they are both connected.

A single-sided tangential ramping milling insert for high speed milling includes opposite insert seating and top surfaces and a peripheral surface which extends therebetween. The milling insert has a reference plane (P) which passes through the entire peripheral surface, midway between the seating and top surfaces. The peripheral surface includes two opposite side surfaces. Each side surface includes a first cutting edge, a second cutting edge connected to the first cutting edge and extending transversely thereto, a ramping cutting edge connected to the second cutting edge and located opposite the first cutting edge, and a rake surface which extends from at least a portion of the first cutting edge toward the insert seating surface. The milling insert includes two ramping relief surfaces, each of which extends from a ramping cutting edge of one side surface towards the first cutting edge of the opposite side surface.

In a rotary cutting tool used for milling operations, a reversible indexable cutting insert is removably secured in a cutting body. The cutting insert has two opposing end surfaces interconnected by a continuous peripheral surface, including three side surfaces alternating with three corner surfaces. The side and corner surfaces intersect with both end surfaces at side and corner edges, respectively, with each side edge having a major cutting edge, and each corner edge having a corner and minor cutting edge. Each major and minor cutting edge slopes away from first and second end points, respectively, of its mutually associated corner cutting edge, towards a median plane. A first imaginary straight line extending perpendicular to the median plane and intersecting any one of the corner cutting edges at any point along its length except the second end point, passes through the median plane inside an insert boundary line.

A cutting insert has a cutting edge formed at the intersection of a side surface an end surface. Recesses formed in the side surface interrupt the cutting edge at recessed cutting edge portions. Each recessed cutting edge portion has, in an end view of the cutting insert, a curved central section located between two curved side sections. The central section has a first radius of curvature and each side section has a second radius of curvature, the first radius of curvature being larger than the second radius of curvature.

A method for manufacturing a cutting insert green body having undercuts includes providing a die cavity formed in closed top and bottom dies; closing a bottom of the die cavity by a bottom punch accommodated in a punch tunnel formed in the bottom die; filling the die cavity with a pre-determined amount of sinterable powder; moving a top punch towards the die cavity through a punch tunnel formed in the top die; compacting the powder by urging the top and bottom punches towards each other, thereby forming the green body; and moving the top die and punch away from the bottom die and punch, thereby enabling removal of the formed green body. An apparatus for manufacturing a cutting insert green body having undercuts includes top and bottom dies which abut each other and top and bottom punches which slide in their respective dies.

Method and apparatus for manufacturing a cutting insert

A tangential cutting insert has an insert body provided with a convex upper surface, a bottom surface provided with a cylindrical insert protrusion, and a peripheral side surface including a pair of opposing major side surfaces and a pair of opposing minor side surfaces. A sloped, major cutting edge in formed at the intersection of each major side surface with the top surface, the rake surface being formed in the major side surface. The bottom surface is provided with an insert protrusion abutment surface for seating the cutting insert. An insert recess is formed in the cylindrical insert protrusion, and this recess communicates with the insert's through bore. The cutting insert is seated in an insert pocket with the insert protrusion abutment surface in abutment with the pocket case. A cylindrical pocket protrusion rising from the pocket base and having a threaded bore formed therein enters the recess and is aligned with the insert's through bore. This allows the threads of a clamping screw to engage complementary threads formed in the threaded bore at a point that is close to the through bore.
