There is disclosed a lightweight portable printer having a frame or housing with a print head and a cooperable platen roll mounted in the housing. The housing pivotally mounts a subassembly. The subassembly mounts an electric motor and gearing driven by the motor for driving the platen roll. The subassembly is resiliently urged to press the print head against the platen roll. The printer has a front door which provides access to the inside of the housing. The front door mounts the platen roll, a label delaminator, a pressure roll, a holder for mounting a supply roll of labels or tags, and a latch for latching the door to the housing and for camming the pressure roll into and out of cooperation with the platen roll.

Portable printer

A lightweight portable printer has a frame or housing with a print head and a cooperable platen roll mounted in the housing. The housing pivotally mounts a subassembly. The subassembly mounts an electric motor and gearing driven by the motor for driving the platen roll. The subassembly is resiliently urged to press the print head against the platen roll. The printer has a front door which provides access to the inside of the housing. The front door mounts the platen roll, a label delaminator, a pressure roll, a holder for mounting a supply roll of labels or tags, and a latch for latching the door to the housing and for camming the pressure roll into and out of cooperation with the platen roll.

There is disclosed a printer for printing and dispensing labels releasably adhered to a carrier web. The printer includes a print head and a cooperable platen roll, a delaminator for delaminating printed labels from the web, a take-up roll for drawing the web about the delaminator, and a slip clutch for limiting the amount of driving force applied to the web by the take-up roll. Slippage occurs at the slip clutch but not between the take-up roll and the web.

There is disclosed a printer having a thermal print head and a cooperable platen roll. The platen roll is driven to advance a web of record medium and an ink ribbon into cooperation with the print head. The printer can use an ink ribbon cartridge. The printer has a compact arrangement for the record medium supply roll, the ink ribbon cartridge, the printing mechanism, the drive mechanism, the keyboard, and the cutting mechanism for cutting tags from the web.

Method of using and operating a printer

There is disclosed a printer having a thermal print head and a cooperable platen roll. The platen roll is driven to advance a web of record medium and an ink ribbon into cooperation with the print head. The printer can use an ink ribbon cartridge. The printer has a compact arrangement for the record medium supply roll, the ink ribbon cartridge, the printing mechanism, the drive mechanism, the keyboard, and the cutting mechanism for cutting tags from the web. The ink ribbon cartridge has movable guides which are aligned by spindles on the printer.

Printer and method

There is disclosed a cutting apparatus which is an improvement over co-owned U.S. Pat. No. 4,693,151 including a mechanism for accelerating the cutting mechanism prior to transverse severing of a traveling web; wherein an elongate knife and a cooperating rotatable knife are mounted on separate mounting members which are biased to urge the knives into cutting cooperation; wherein an electric motor is stationarily mounted and the cutting mechanism moves together with the traveling web, and the electric motor causes the rotatable knife to travel through a flexible drive connection; and wherein the rotatable knife is mounted for sliding movement on a slide mounted on a rod, with the slide having a bearing protected by and between a pair of spaced floating seals received on the rod.

Cutting apparatus

The printing apparatus is composed essentially of molded plastics material. The apparatus is illustrated as being of the table top type which can print both standard type tags and labels, string tags and pin tickets. The apparatus has a print head operable in conjunction with an impression control device, a feed finger assembly with a registration adjustment, a simple drive arrangement operated by a cam with a single campath, and a reel positionable at different attitudes, and the construction of the apparatus is readily adaptable to both manually operated and motorized versions.
