A communications system is to communicate with an application server storing a plurality of applications. The communications system includes a mobile wireless communications device configured to store at least one application from among the plurality of applications, the at least one application having stored version information associated therewith. An intermediate server is configured to update the mobile wireless communications device by at least obtaining respective current version information for associated current versions of the plurality of applications and obtaining the stored application version information from the mobile wireless communications device for the at least one stored application. The stored application version information is compared with the current version information for the at least one stored application. New application portions are downloaded from a current application associated with the current version information, and the new application portions are sent to the mobile wireless communications device.

In one embodiment, an apparatus accesses a memory to obtain information regarding sharing history (as pertains, for example, to a particular user and/or device) and uses that sharing history to display at least one recommended sharing action (from amongst a plurality of available candidate sharing actions) as regards to a particular content item (such as, for example, a particular digital photograph, a video, a presentation, and so forth). Various embodiments include apparatus and methods to manage security of data in an electronic system on an application-by-application basis. Managing security of data may include an apparatus, system, or method structured to determine that a status of a feature in the electronic device satisfies a specified criterion, and to automatically activate a portion of a security mechanism in the electronic device to lock down an application that is open in the electronic device after determining that the status has satisfied the specified criterion. A method and apparatus managing processing resources in a portable electronic device are provided. An area of the display device is controlled to provide a banner region comprising device state data, the area of the display device enabled to receive focus using an input device. While focus is in the banner region, first input data is receiving, and the display device is responsively controlled to provide in the banner region an indication of the first application, replacing the device state data. Further input data is received while the indication of the first application is provided in the banner region. In response and, in response, at least one of the following occurs: the first application is brought to the foreground by controlling the display device to provide a representation of the first application; and the first application is closed such that resources used by the processing unit are reduced.

Method and apparatus for managing processing resources in a portable electronic device

A mobile communications device may include a near field communication (NFC) transceiver switchable between a plurality of modes including a first NFC mode and a second NFC mode, wherein the second NFC mode has a lower power consumption level associated therewith than the first NFC mode. The mobile communications device may further include a processor coupled with the NFC transceiver and capable of activating an application, switching the NFC transceiver to operate in the first NFC mode in response to activating the application, and switching the NFC transceiver to the second NFC mode based upon a failure to establish NFC communications within a threshold time of switching the NFC transceiver to the first NFC mode.

Mobile communications device providing enhanced near field communication (NFC) mode switching features and related methods

According to embodiments described in the specification, a method and apparatus for controlling the display of a mobile electronic device are provided. The mobile electronic device comprises a display; a memory for storing a first application, a first identifier identifying the first application and a second identifier for identifying a second application; and, a processor interconnected with the display and the memory, the processor configured to control the display to generate a launch interface comprising a representation of the second identifier for launching the first application.
