Provided is a novel Nanofiltration-DiaNanofiltration (NF-DiaNF) system and method for extracting divalent ions from saline water (e.g., seawater) to produce solutions rich in divalent ions (in particular Mg2+, Ca2+ and SO42&#x2212;), while minimizing the concentrations of undesirable species (e.g., Cl&#x2212;, Br&#x2212;, B and Na+). The solutions may be added to water (e.g., desalinated, soft, drinking or irrigation water) to enrich the water with divalent ions, thereby improving its quality.

Provided are physico-chemical processes for continuous and simultaneous water disinfection, oxidation of off flavor agents, minimization of trihalomethane (THM) production, reduction of nitrate and nitrite production and oxidation of ammonia so as to remove nitrogen species, in saline (for example, seawater) based aquaculture systems. The aquaculture system may be any handling/storage/transport system, for example, recirculated aquaculture systems (RAS), for fish or other aquaculture species.

Disinfection and removal of nitrogen species from saline aquaculture systems

The present invention relates to a process for the selective removal of nitrates from ground water using a hybrid nanofiltration (NF)&#x2014;reverse osmosis (RO) filtration system. The process generates product water that is low in nitrate and can be used for drinking, irrigation and other purposes, as well as waste water that is relatively low in salinity and can be safely discarded to sewage systems and recycled, e.g., for irrigation purposes.

Removal of nitrates from ground water

The present invention provides processes for removing nitrogen species from fresh water or high salinity water recirculated aquaculture systems. The processes are based on physico-chemical treatments which are performed at ambient temperatures and at low p H values thus keeping the total ammonia nitrogen concentrations below a value which is considered detrimental for the growth or survival rate of cultured fish/shrimp.
