Crude chlorosilane streams containing lower-boiling chlorosilanes and higher-boiling chlorosilanes are separated by contacting them with a distillation aid. The lower-boiling chlorosilanes are separated from the crude chlorosilane stream, and then the distillation aid and the higher-boiling chlorosilanes are separated from one another. The distillation aid is a mono-cyano-substituted organic compound, a nitro-substituted organic compound, a mono-cyano-substituted organosilicon compound, a nitro-substituted organosilicon compound, or a mixture thereof. These distillation aids increase the relative volatility of crude chlorosilane streams such as methyltrichlorosilane and dimethyldichlorosilane resulting in improved separation at lower capital and/or fixed costs.

Binary azeotrope and azeotrope-like compositions contain 1-butoxy-2-propanol, 1-(2-methoxy-1-methylethoxy)-2-propanol, 1-(2-ethoxy-1-methylethoxy)-2-propanol, 1-(2-propoxy-1-methylethoxy)-2-propanol, and 1-(2-methoxy-1-methylethoxy)-2-propanol-acetate, with decamethyltetrasiloxane (MDDM), and are useful for cleaning, rinsing, or drying.

Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane azeotropes

New binary azeotropes of hexamethyldisiloxane with certain alcohols, and the use of the binary azeotropes as environmentally friendly cleaning agents are disclosed. The alcohol component of the binary azeotrope is 3-methyl-3-pentanol C.sub.2 H.sub.5 C(CH.sub.3)(OH) C.sub.2 H.sub.5 ; 2-pentanol CH.sub.3 CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 CH(OH) CH.sub.3, or 1-methoxy-2-propanol CH.sub.3 OCH.sub.2 CH(CH.sub.3)OH.

Hexamethyldisiloxane containing azeotropes

New binary azeotropes and azeotrope-like compositions are mixtures containing octamethyltrisiloxane and 2-butoxyethanol, 2-methylcyclohexanol, or isopropyl lactate. The mixtures are useful as environmentally friendly cleaning, rinsing, and drying agents.

The alcohol and ester components of the binary azeotrope are 2-methyl-1-pentanol, 1-hexanol, 1-butoxy-2-propanol, and ethyl lactate.

Octamethyltrisiloxane containing azeotropes

A method for separating close-boiling chlorosilanes by the procedures of extractive distillation using sulfolane as the extractive solvent is described. An example of close-boiling chlorosilanes which can be separated by this method include dimethyldichlorosilane and methyltrichlorosilane containing mixtures. The invention comprises heating a mixture of the close-boiling chlorosilanes with sulfolane to distill the lower-boiling chlorosilane from the mixture and thereafter separating the sulfolane and the high-boiling chlorosilane.
