A microfluidic device includes a microchannel, which defines a flow path for a liquid. It further includes a liquid-pinning trench, which is arranged so as to form an opening that extends across the flow path. In addition, the device includes an electrode extending across the flow path so as to at least partly overlap the trench. The trench and overlapping electrode make up an electrowetting gate, which allows an efficient, reliable, and easy-to-implement flow control mechanism. In addition, such a mechanism requires relatively low actuation voltages (less than 10 V) to resume the liquid flow. Thus, a microfluidic chip having gates such as described herein can be controlled with a portable system, e.g., a smartphone connectivity. The present devices may notably be embodied as point-of-care diagnostic devices. Related devices, as well as methods of operation and methods of fabrication of such devices, are also disclosed.

Simple flow control for microfluidic devices

Embodiments of the invention provide a microfluidic chip having microfluidic structures formed on a surface. The structures form an input channel, an output channel, auxiliary channels, and a hydraulic resistor structure connecting the input channel to the output channel via the auxiliary channels. The resistor structure includes N flow resistor portions (N&#x2265;2), which are connected to the auxiliary channels. The chip further includes at least N&#x2212;1 actuatable valves, which are arranged in respective ones of the auxiliary channels. The actuation state of the valves can determine the effective hydraulic resistance of the resistor structure. The valves can be electrogates, each including a liquid-pinning trench arranged in a respective one of the auxiliary channels that define a flow path for a liquid introduced therein, so as to form an opening that extends across said flow path. Each electrogate can further include an electrode extending across the flow path.

Programmable hydraulic resistor array for microfluidic chips

A microfluidic device includes a surface, which defines a flow path for a liquid, and a liquid inlet, which is in fluid communication with said surface, so as for a liquid introduced via the inlet to advance along a propagation direction on the flow path. Also included are a set of two or more electrical contacts, and a set of electrodes which include sensing portions that extend across the flow path, transversally to the propagation direction. The electrodes are connected to the two or more electrical contacts. Also included are material spots on at least some of the sensing portions of the electrodes. Still, material spots of a same material are only on a subset of the sensing portions of the electrodes, so that the spots can alter an electrical signal detected from the electrical contacts, upon a liquid advancing along the flow path, in operation of the device.

Covert codes based on electrical sensing of patterned materials in microfluidic devices

Embodiments of the invention are directed to a microfluidic device. The device comprises a flow path structure that includes an inlet microchannel and chambers. The flow path structure is configured as an arborescence extending from the inlet microchannel to the chambers. Thus, liquid introduced in said inlet microchannel can potentially enter the chambers via respective flow paths to remain essentially confined in the chambers, in operation. The device further comprises substances in selected ones of the chambers. That is, a subset of the chambers is loaded with substances adapted for interacting with liquid to yield a detectable change in a property of the liquid and/or the substance in each of the chambers of said subset, in operation. The invention is further directed to related devices, and methods of operation and conditioning.

Microfluidic device with array of chambers for encoding detectable information

Embodiments of the invention are directed to a method of separating and encapsulating an analyte on a microfluidic device in order to extract the analyte. A microfluidic device is provided having a main microchannel and a set of one or more auxiliary microchannels, each branching to the main microchannel at respective junctions therewith. A mixture is introduced as a single phase in the main microchannel in order to electrokinetically separate an analyte from the introduced mixture, and in order to confine the separated analyte in a microchannel portion of the main microchannel. The microchannel portion adjoins one of the junctions. One or more encapsulating volumes of an encapsulating phase are injected in the main microchannel via one or more of the auxiliary microchannels. The encapsulating phase is immiscible with said single phase. The encapsulated analyte is extracted from the main microchannel via one or more of the auxiliary microchannels.

Electrokinetically separating, encapsulating and extracting analytes on a microfluidic device

Methods are provided for authenticating a container of items to be sent by a sender to a receiver. The method includes: packing a plurality of items, each having a respective item identifier, in the container; providing a container identifier on the container; and generating a first digital signature by signing a message, comprising the container identifier and each item identifier, using a secret signing key skof a signing-verification key pair (sk, pk) of a digital signature scheme. The method further comprises providing the first digital signature for access by the receiver, and sending the container to the receiver. A corresponding verification method comprises accessing the first digital signature, and verifying the first digital signature for the container identifier and the item identifier for each item in the container using the verification key pkof the sender key pair (sk, pk).

Authentication in distribution systems

A method for optically reading information encoded in a microfluidic device, the microfluidic device including an input microchannel, microfluidic modules, and sets of nodes. Nodes of a first set connect the input microchannel to one of the microfluidic modules, and nodes of a second set connect the one of the microfluidic modules to another to form an ordered pair of the microfluidic modules, where the nodes of the first and second sets have different liquid pinning strengths. A liquid loaded into the input microchannel causes an ordered passage of the liquid through each of the microfluidic modules in an order determined by the liquid pinning strengths of the nodes. The passage of the liquid produces an optically readable dynamic pattern which evolves in accordance with the ordered passage of the liquid through the device.

Microfluidic device with programmable verification features

Methods are provided for producing an authenticated packaged product. The method includes providing on the product a security code encoding security data for the product, packing the product in packaging, and providing a tag carrying encrypted product data on the packaging. The product data comprises the security data for the product. The method further comprises storing a decryption key for the encrypted product data at a network server, and providing on the packaging access data for accessing the decryption key at the network server. Corresponding methods and systems are provided for verifying authenticity of such an authenticated packaged product.

Authentication of packaged products

The invention is directed to a microfluidic device, which comprises distinct, parallel levels, including a first level and a second level. It further includes: a first microchannel, a second microchannel, and a node. This node comprises: an inlet port, a cavity, a via, and an outlet port. The cavity is formed on the first level and is open on a top side. The inlet port is defined on the first level; it branches from the first microchannel and communicates with the cavity through an ingress thereof. The outlet port, branches to the second microchannel on the second level. The via extends from the bottom side of the cavity, down to the outlet port, so the cavity may communicate with the outlet port. In addition, the cavity comprises a liquid blocking element to prevent an aqueous liquid filling the inlet port to reach the outlet port.

Microfluidic device with multi-level, programmable microfluidic node

The invention is directed to a microfluidic device. The device includes an input microchannel, a set of m distribution microchannels, a set of m microfluidic modules and a set of m nodes. The m microfluidic modules (m&#x2265;2) are in fluidic communication with the m distribution microchannels, respectively. The one or more nodes of the set of m nodes branch from the input microchannel, and further branch to a respective one of the set of m distribution microchannels. In addition, a subset, but not all, of the nodes are altered. The nodes of the set of m nodes have different liquid pinning strengths. As a result, the extent in which a liquid passes through one or more of the m microfluidic modules varies based on the different liquid pinning strengths, in operation. Additional sets of nodes may be provided to allow liquid to pass through ordered pairs of modules.
