Acrolein is a useful additive for treating hydrocarbon fluids, such as crude oil, for multiple purposes including, but not necessarily limited to, reducing or preventing microbial activity, scavenging hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and/or at least partially dissolving iron sulfide (FeS). Acrolein can be stabilized against decomposition by mixing or combining it with at least one alkyl carbonate, which can also raise the flash point of the stabilized acrolein composition.

A gas hydrate inhibitor formulation used to prevent or inhibit the formation of gas hydrates in multi-phase fluids, such as hydrocarbon production fluids, includes at least one gas hydrate inhibitor and at least one organic carbonate solvent, which may be an organic carbonate, a derivative of the organic carbonate, or a combination thereof. The at least one organic carbonate solvent may be ethylene carbonate, propylene carbonate, glycerol carbonate, an aromatic carbonate, a dialkyl carbonate, an alkyl carbonate, or a combination of the same. The at least one gas hydrate inhibitor may be polyesteramides, polyvinylpyrrolidones, a vinylcaprolactam/vinyl pyrrolidone copolymer, polyvinyl caprolactam or a combination thereof.

Application of carbonates and their derivatives in formulations for gas hydrate inhibitors

Green demulsifiers useful for demulsifying emulsions of water and crude oil are made by reacting together an alcohol, a multifunctional acid and/or anhydride, and a fatty acid, and optionally a polyol that is polyethylene glycol and/or polypropylene glycol. The green demulsifier has ester bonds between the reactant moieties. These ester bonds can hydrolyze which results in relatively high biodegradation.

Methods of designing green demulsifiers

A scale inhibitor squeeze treatment is enhanced by injecting a pre-flush solution into a wellbore, where the pre-flush solution includes at least one organic carbonate solvent, such as a dialkyl carbonate and/or a cyclic carbonate. The use of an organic carbonate solvent can help prevent the pre-flush solution emulsion formation, help avoid water-blocking, and enhance scale inhibitor adsorption. The use of an organic carbonate solvent also permits the pre-flush solution to be free of water, in one non-limiting embodiment.

Dispersants including at least one organic carbonate can keep deposits dispersed within hydrocarbons, where the solids are asphaltenes and derivatives from triazine-based HS scavengers.
