Control signals for a wastegate or variable nozzle turbine are generated from a turbocharger kinetic energy controller.

Air-path coordination in an engine

A secondary air injection valve is provided to selectively allow intake air to pass to the exhaust side of the engine system to aid in exothermic reaction with exhaust gasses exiting the engine for various purposes. The iterative calculations of mass flow include estimation of the mass flow through the secondary air injection valve.

Methods and systems for controlling a system such as an engine having an airflow system. A model predictive control calculation is configured in an off-line mode, having a linear part and a non-linear part. In an on-line mode, the linear part of the MPC and/or a Hessian matrix used with the MPC is modified responsive to special modes or other operating changes or conditions. The online mode is configured to respond to changing modes or conditions without requiring recalculation of the MPC. Certain changes of conditions and modes are used to modify feedforward, while others modify responsiveness.

System and method for on-line recalibration of control systems

A system and approach for catalyst model parameter identification with modeling accomplished by an identification procedure that may incorporate a catalyst parameter identification procedure which may include determination of parameters for a catalyst device, specification of values for parameters and component level identification. Component level identification may be of a thermal model, adsorption and desorption, and chemistry. There may then be system level identification to get a final estimate of catalyst parameters.

Approach for aftertreatment system modeling and model identification

A system and approach for storing factors in a quadratic programming solver of an embedded model predictive control platform. The solver may be connected to an optimization model which may be connected to a factorization module. The factorization module may incorporate a memory containing saved factors that may be connected to a factor search mechanism to find a nearest stored factor in the memory. A factor update unit may be connected to the factor search mechanism to obtain the nearest stored factor to perform a factor update. The factorization module may provide variable ordering to reduce a number of factors that need to be stored to permit the factors to be updated at zero floating point operations per unit of time.

Quadratic program solver for MPC using variable ordering

A system that provides an estimation of quantities, which are not necessarily directly measurable in a subsystem. The estimates of these quantities may be inferred from other variables. This approach may be referred to as inferential sensing. Physical sensors may be replaced with models or virtual sensors, also known as inferential sensors. The present approach may be a framework for designing inferential sensors in automotive subsystems. The framework may incorporate preparing a model for an observed subsystem, populating a real-time template with data, and running an inferential sensor periodically together with a model in real-time to obtain estimated variables. Once implemented, the framework may be reused for virtually any automotive subsystem without needing significant software code changes.

Method and system for vehicle cruise control

A system and method for solving a quadratic programming optimization problem with bound constraints using a semi-explicit QP solver with respect to an embedded platform is presented. A linear system of equations associated with a matrix (e.g., a Karush-Kuhn-Tucker matrix, KKT system) can be solved at each iteration of the solver based on a factorization approach. A set of partial factors with respect to the QP problem can be pre-computed off-line and stored into a memory. The factorization process of the KKT matrix can then be finished on-line in each iteration of the semi-explicit QP solver in order to effectively solve the QP optimization problems. The QP problem can be solved utilizing a standard active-set approach and/or a partial explicit approach based on a processor utilization and memory usage.
