Metal-organic framework molecules with pyrene group-containing or biphenyl group-containing linkers for use in the removal of uremic toxins from biological samples that contain such toxins are provided. Also provided are methods for using the MOFs to remove uremic toxins from biological samples. The methods include hemodialysis of blood samples from patients suffering from a uremia-related disease, such as chronic kidney failure.

Metal-organic frameworks for the removal of uremic toxins

A series of isoreticular metal-organic frameworks composed of metal nodes connected by rigid trigonal prismatic organic linkers and having a 6,12-coordinatled alb network topology are provided. Also provided are methods of synthesizing the metal-organic frameworks and methods of using the metal-organic frameworks to catalyze the hydrolysis of organic molecules, such as nerve agents, having hydrolysable bonds.

Ligand-directed reticular synthesis of metal-organic frameworks having edge-transitive ALB network topologies

Mesoporous zirconium metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) having insulin immobilized therein and methods of using the MOFs in insulin delivery are provided. The insulin-loaded metal-organic framework molecules include a porous zirconium metal-organic framework molecule and insulin molecules within pores of the porous zirconium metal-organic framework.

Enzyme-immobilizing MOFs and methods for their use in enzymatically catalyzed reactions are provided. The MOFs are channel-type MOFs that present a hierarchical pore structure comprising a first set of large channels sized for enzyme immobilization and a second set of smaller channels running alongside of the large channels that remain enzyme-free and allow for reactant delivery to the enzymes and product expulsion from the larger channels.

A method of adsorbing a highly reactive gas onto an adsorbent material comprising adsorbing the highly reactive gas to the adsorbent material. The adsorbent material comprises at least one Lewis basic functional group, or pores of a size to hold a single molecule of the highly reactive gas, or inert moieties which are provided to the adsorbent material at the same time at the same time as the highly reactive gas, prior to adsorbing the highly reactive gas or after adsorbing the highly reactive gas, or the highly reactive gas reacts with moieties of the adsorbent material resulting in passivation of the adsorbent material. A rate of decomposition of the adsorbed highly reactive gas is lower than a rate of decomposition for the neat gas at equal volumetric loadings and equal temperatures for both the adsorbed highly reactive gas and the neat gas.

Adsorbent-assisted stabilization of highly reactive gases

The present invention provides for the use of a metal-organic framework (MOF) in removing particular chemical species or compounds, in particular oxy-anions, from a liquid or liquid stream. In some embodiments, the MOF is a Zr-based MOF, such as NU-1000, and the oxy-anions that are removed include, include, for example, oxy-anions of selenium, including selenite (SeO) and selenate (SeO); oxy-anions of antimony, including oxy-anions in either the Sb[III] (antimonite) or the Sb[V] (antimonate) redox state; and oxy-anions of lead, including oxy-anions in either the Pb[II] or the Pb[IV] redox state, such as Pb(OH), Pb(OH), PbO, and PbO. The Zr-based MOF, including NU-1000 can be used to remove these oxy-anions from various liquid streams in industrial processes such as a nuclear and fossil fuel power plants, including the latter's flue gas desulfurization system.

Hafnium-based metal-organic frameworks as epoxide ring-opening catalysts

The present invention provides a metal-organic framework (MOF) for use in removing particular chemical species or compounds from a liquid. In particular, the present invention provides an MOF having a molecular formula of Zr(&#x3bc;-O)(&#x3bc;OH)(OH)(HO)(TBAPy), wherein TBAPy is 1,3,6,8-tetrakis (p-benzoic-acid)pyrene, (known as NU-1000) for use in complexing selenate or selenite from a liquid or liquid stream. Further, the selenium based oxy-anions are removed to concentrations below that specified for wastewater discharge by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for flue gas desulfurization operations in the fossil fueled electric power generation industry. Such water treatment results are achieved even in the presence of competing sulfate anion challenges and at elevated temperatures comparable to condensate cooling water.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and method of using the MOFs to catalyze reactions involving epoxide ring-opening mechanisms are provided. The structure of the MOFs can be represented by the formula: M(&#x3bc;-ligand)(OH)(TBAPy), where M is Zr or Hf, the ligands are selected from hydroxo-, oxo- and aquo-ligands, and x is independently selected from 1 or 2.

Zirconium- and hafnium-based metal-organic frameworks as epoxide ring-opening catalysts

An electrochemical sensor for an analyte is provided. The electrochemical sensor includes CDMOF-2. The CDMOF-2 is capable of binding reversibly to COas an analyte, thereby quantitatively detecting the analyte in a mixture. The CDMOF-2 is formed from reaction of &#x3b3;-cyclodextrin with RbOH in the presence of methanol.
