The present invention provides novel methods, systems, tools, and kits for the simultaneous detection, identification and/or characterization of all viruses known or suspected to infect vertebrates. The methods, systems, tools, and kits described herein are based upon the virome capture sequencing platform ('VirCapSeq-VERT'), a novel platform developed by the inventors. The invention also provides methods and kits for designing and constructing of the virome capture sequencing platform.

The present invention provides systems and methods for determining the presence or absence of one or more target nucleic acid sequences in a sample. Also provided are kits comprising these systems, and uses of these systems in such applications as determining the presence or absence of at least one target nucleic acid sequence in a sample, detecting microorganism transcripts and host transcripts, differentiating microorganism transcripts from host transcripts, screening blood products, assaying a food product for contamination, assaying a sample for environmental contamination, detecting genetically-modified organisms, biodefense, forensics, and genetic-comparability studies. The present invention further provides a complex that includes a target nucleic acid sequence, a capture nucleic acid, and a reporter nucleic acid.

Multiplex systems, methods, and kits for detecting and identifying nucleic acids

The present invention provides a synthetic nucleic acid sequence comprising 10-30 nucleotides of the N gene region and/or the 3' non-coding region of the SARS-associated coronavirus genome, and a synthetic nucleic acid sequence comprising 10-30 nucleotides of a nucleic acid sequence that is complementary to at least one of those regions. Also provided are compositions comprising the sequences, and uses of the sequences in diagnostic kits. The present invention further provides a primer set for determining the presence or absence of SARS-associated coronavirus in a biological sample, wherein the primer set comprises at least one of the synthetic nucleic acid sequences. Also provided are a composition comprising the primer set, and use of the primer set in a diagnostic kit. Finally, the present invention provides kits and methods for determining the presence or absence of SARS-associated coronavirus in a biological sample.
