Various systems, processes, and products may be used to filter multicast messages in virtual environments. In one implementation, a multicast filtering address is received by a network adapter. A frequency of use of the multicast filtering address is determined and, based on the frequency of use of the multicast filtering address, the multicast filtering address is stored in either a multicast filtering store of the network adapter or a local filtering store of a respective virtual machine.

Multicast message filtering in virtual environments

Various systems, processes, and products may be used to filter multicast messages in virtual environments. In one implementation, a multicast filtering address is received by a network adapter from at least one of a number of virtual machines. A priority of the multicast filtering address is determined and, based on the priority, the multicast filtering address is stored in either a multicast filtering store of the network adapter or a local filtering store of the at least one virtual machine.

In one implementation, a multicast filtering address is received by a network adapter from at least one of a number of virtual machines. An amount of filtering data is determined corresponding to the at least one virtual machine and, based on the amount of the filtering data corresponding to the at least one virtual machine, the multicast filtering address is stored in either a multicast filtering store of the network adapter or a local filtering store of the at least one virtual machine.

Various systems, processes, and products may be used to filter multicast messages in virtual environments. In one implementation, a multicast filtering address is received by a network adapter from at least one of a number of virtual machines of a computer system. Responsive to receiving the multicast filtering address, a determination is made whether a multicast filtering store of the network adapter is full. Responsive to determining that the multicast filtering store of the network adapter is full, the multicast filtering address is stored in a local filtering store of the at least one virtual machine.

Various systems, processes, and products may be used to filter multicast messages in virtual environments. In one implementation, hardware resources are virtualized to provide a plurality of virtual machines where a number of the virtual machines are configured to receive multicast messages. A network adapter is configured to receive a multicast filtering address from at least one of the number of virtual machines and hash the multicast filtering address to create a hash value. The hash value is linked to the virtual machine via a memory entry.

Various systems, processes, and products may be used to filter multicast messages in virtual environments. In particular implementations, a system, process, and product for filtering multicast messages in virtual environments may include the ability to, responsive to receiving a multicast message including a destination address, examine a local filtering store of the network adapter for a multicast filtering address matching the destination address. The message is sent to respective virtual machines if the destination address matches the multicast filtering address found in the local filtering store for the respective virtual machines. Responsive to determining that the destination address does not match any multicast filtering address found in the local filtering store, a determination is made whether the local filtering store is full and, if so, the multicast message is dropped.

Mechanisms are provided for performing traffic load balancing on ingress traffic directed to a Link Aggregation Group (LAG). The mechanisms monitor a ingress traffic load across a plurality of links of the Link Aggregation Group (LAG). The mechanisms determine if the ingress traffic load across the plurality of links is unbalanced. Moreover, the mechanisms, in response to determining that the ingress traffic load across the plurality of links is unbalanced, send a message to a switch associated with the LAG requesting the switch to modify routing of ingress traffic to the LAG to perform ingress traffic load balancing.

A method and technique for data flow affinity for heterogeneous virtual machines includes: connecting first and second logical partitions to a shared virtual adapter, the first logical partition having a maximum receive unit (MRU) different than a MRU of the second logical partition; responsive to receiving data by the shared virtual adapter destined for the first or second logical partitions, performing transmission control protocol (TCP) segmentation offload processing of the data by the shared virtual adapter utilizing the MRU of the first logical partition as the transmission unit for data destined for the first logical partition and utilizing the MRU of the second logical partition as the transmission unit for data destined for the second logical partition; and disabling large receive offload (LRO) processing of data by a physical adapter if either of the first or second logical partitions does not support LRO.

Various systems, processes, and products may be used to filter multicast messages in virtual environments. In particular implementations, a system, process, and product for filtering multicast messages in virtual environments may include the ability to determine whether a multicast message has been received, examine a local filtering store for a match for the destination address of the multicast message, and send the message to a number of virtual machines if a match for the address is found. The system, process, and product may also include the ability to analyze a filtering store of at least one of the virtual machines for a match for the address if a match is not found in the local filtering store and send the message to a number of the virtual machines if a match for the address is found in a filtering store of one of the virtual machines.

A set of entry blocks is allocated. An entry block is configured with a set of monitoring attributes to store monitoring data corresponding to a monitoring request. The entry block is updated with an identifier supplied in the monitoring request. The entry block is used to store the monitoring data responsive to the monitoring request. The monitoring data comprises a continuous record of data changes at a requested location in memory from a beginning to an end a of an event corresponding to the monitoring request. A size of the monitoring data is distinct from another size of another monitoring data stored in another entry block in the set of entry blocks responsive to another monitoring request. An operation specified in the monitoring request is performed on a part of the monitoring data accessible from a monitoring attribute in the set of monitoring attributes of the entry block.

Continuous monitoring and analysis of software events

An approach is provided in which a migration agent receives a message to migrate a virtual machine from a first system to a second system. The first system extracts hardware state data stored in a native format from a memory area located on first system's network adapter. The hardware state data is utilized by the first system's network adapter to process data packets generated by the virtual machine. Next, the virtual machine is migrated to the second system, which includes copying the extracted hardware state data from the first system to the second system. In turn, the second system configures a corresponding second network adapter by writing the copied hardware state data to a memory located on the second network adapter.

Live logical partition migration with stateful offload connections using context extraction and insertion

An approach is provided that collects data from a multi-function adapter that is used by multiple functions. In the approach, a master function is dynamically selected from the group of functions. The approach further allows the master function to perform a disruptive adapter data collection while inhibiting performance of disruptive adapter data collection processes by the other (non-master) functions.

According to one aspect of the present disclosure, a method and technique for dynamic reconfiguration of network devices for outage prediction is disclosed. The method includes: aggregating a plurality of network devices to form an input/output (I/O) link bundle; identifying a quality of service level of data throughput needed by at least one workload utilizing the I/O link bundle; monitoring a parameter of each of the network devices of the I/O link bundle; determining whether the monitored parameter indicates a predicted data throughout quality of service level decrease by a network device being utilized by the workload below the quality of service level for the workload; and responsive to determining that the monitored parameter indicates a predicted quality of service level decrease by the respective network device, dynamically reconfiguring the link bundle to maintain the quality of service level for the workload utilizing the I/O link bundle.
