An apparatus for downwardly drawing a glass ribbon includes a forming vessel including an upper portion including a pair of outside surfaces and a forming wedge portion including a pair of downwardly inclined forming surfaces converging along a downstream direction to form a bottom edge. An edge director is provided that includes a flow directing portion formed from a portion of a frustoconical or conical shape.

Embodiments of the disclosure relate to an optical fiber ribbon. The optical fiber ribbon includes optical fibers arranged in a row having a first width. Indicator fibers are provided at the edges of the row. The indicator fibers have different color fiber jackets. The optical fiber ribbon also includes a primary matrix into which the plurality of optical fibers is embedded. The optical fiber ribbon also includes an opacifying layer having a second width and a color layer, distinct from the opacifying layer, having a third width. The optical fiber ribbon further includes a layer of printing disposed on an outer surface of the primary matrix. In the optical fiber ribbon, the first width is greater than at least one of the second width or the third width such that the indicator fibers extend past at least one of the opacifying layer or the color layer.

According to one embodiment, a forming body of a glass forming apparatus may include an upper portion with a first forming surface and a second forming surface extending from the upper portion. The first forming surface and the second forming surface may converge at a bottom edge of the forming body. A trough for receiving molten glass may be positioned in the upper portion of the forming body. The trough may include a first weir, a second weir opposite from and spaced apart from the first weir, and a base extending between the first weir and the second weir. At least a portion of a vertical surface of the first weir may curve inward towards a centerline of the trough. Similarly, at least a portion of a vertical surface of the second weir may curve inward towards the centerline of the trough.

A laminated glass article includes at least a first layer, a second layer in direct contact with the first layer, and an optical property difference between the first layer and the second layer. The optical property difference includes at least one of: (a) a transmission profile difference between a transmission profile of the first and second layers in a wavelength range from 200 nm to 2500 nm; or (b) a light-polarizing difference, whereby the second layer is light-polarizing with respect to electromagnetic irradiation in the wavelength range from 200 nm to 2500 nm; or (c) a refractive index difference between refractive indices of the first and second layers of at least 0.005, wherein one layer includes a base glass composition and the other layer includes the base glass composition and a dopant in an amount sufficient to cause the refractive index difference.

Disclosed herein are apparatuses and methods for drawing sheet glass. More particularly, one or more sets of edge rolls can be configured to have a rotation axis angled away from a line orthogonal to the direction of flow of a ribbon of glass and positioned so as to contact the glass in the viscous region of the draw. Through control over the orientation and position of the one or more sets of edge rolls, sheet width attenuation may be eliminated, thickness of the beads that form along the edges of the glass sheet may be reduced, and instabilities associated with sheet width variation may be eliminated.

An apparatus for forming glass tubing is described. The apparatus for forming glass tubing comprises an endless former with an outer surface and an inner passage defining an inner surface. The apparatus for forming glass tubing further comprises two chambers from which molten glass may flow. One chamber flows molten glass to the outer surface of the endless former and another chamber flows molten glass to the inner surface of the endless former. The two flows of molten glass meet at the bottom of the former to form glass tubing.

An apparatus () for forming the outer layers of a glass laminate sheet comprises a reservoir (), individual first () and second () distributors extending below and in fluid communication with the reservoir, and first () and second () slots positioned respectively at the bottom of the first and second distributors. The slots have a length, the distributors have sides and a middle, and the length of the slots on the sides of the distributors is desirably decreased relative to the length of the slots in the middle of the distributors. The apparatus is useful with a trough or isopipe () to provide clad glass streams to contact an overflowing core glass on respective sides of the trough or isopipe.

Apparatus and method for forming the outer layers of a glass laminate sheet

A glass forming apparatus and method include a weir on at least a first side of a molten core glass reservoir. The weir includes an inclined surface that, in the intended direction of molten glass flow, slopes downward in the vertical direction while extending away from the molten core glass reservoir in the horizontal direction. A source of molten clad glass is configured above the glass forming apparatus such that when molten clad glass is flowing down and molten core glass is flowing over the weir, the molten clad glass drops onto the molten core glass at a highest upstream contact point that is located directly above the inclined surface of the weir.

Glass forming apparatus and method

This disclosure relates to methods and apparatus for controlling glass flow in, for example, a downdraw glass manufacturing process (e.g., the fusion downdraw process). The methods and apparatus are particularly well-suited for use in the manufacture of glass sheets such as the glass sheets used as substrates in display devices, e.g., liquid crystal displays (LCDs).

Glass flow management by thermal conditioning

Methods of drawing glass sheet via a downdraw process are provided. In certain aspects, the methods utilize rapid cooling below the root () of the forming apparatus (). Such rapid cooling can, for example, facilitate the use of glass having a liquidus viscosity less than about 100,000 poise. In other aspects, the methods utilize slow cooling between the viscosities of 10poises and 10poises. Such slow cooling can facilitate the production of glass substrates which exhibit low levels of compaction. In further aspects, substrates are removed from the glass sheet at elevated temperatures which can facilitate increases in the production rates of downdraw machines. In still further aspects, rapid cooling below the root, slow cooling between the viscosities of 10poises and 10poises, and/or substrate removal at elevated temperatures are combined. Such combinations can facilitate economically effective utilization of downdraw equipment.

Method of making a glass sheet using controlled cooling

Methods and apparatus for controlling glass flow in, for example, a downdraw glass manufacturing process (e.g., the fusion downdraw process) are provided. In certain aspects, the mass, thickness, and/or the temperature distribution of molten glass () on the surface of forming apparatus () is managed by: (A) constructing a stream-tube mapping between (i) regions (; FIG.A) of a cross-section of a conduit () that supplies molten glass () to the forming apparatus () and (ii) regions (; FIG.B) on the exterior surface of the forming apparatus (); (B) using the stream-tube mapping to select a temperature distribution for the cross-section that results in a desired mass, thickness, and/or temperature distribution of molten glass () on the surface of the forming apparatus (); and (C) heating and/or insulating the conduit () so as to produce a temperature distribution for the cross-section which equals or at least approximates the distribution selected in step (B).
