This specification relates to systems and methods for determining eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a covariance matrix, for example for use in eigen-beamforming in MIMO systems. According to a first aspect of this specification, there is describes a method comprising: receiving an input covariance matrix; and determining one or more eigenvalues and/or eigenvectors of the matrix iteratively using gradient ascent, wherein each iteration of the gradient ascent has a step size, μ, that maximises a Rayleigh quotient along the gradient.

Eigen decomposition by gradient ascent

Solutions to determine how to form beams when co-operating multiple-input multiple-output antenna panels are used are disclosed. Beams are formed according to sets of beamforming weights corresponding to minimized total transmit power from an antenna array of interest to served terminal devices. Optimization to minimize total transmit power subject to a predefined constraint on a minimum allowable expected value of signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio, SINR, is performed. In the optimization expected values of SINR for a terminal device are calculated based on based on the sets of beamforming weights for at least the served terminal devices, and weighted second order statistics, wherein a weighting factor for second order statistics between the served terminal devices and the antenna array is one and weighting factors for the other second order statistics less than one. The second order statistics are included in maintained channel state information.

Interference aware eigen-beamforming based on second order statistics

A technique is provided including at least obtaining a noise and interference covariance matrix, performing scaling of the noise and interference covariance matrix, determining a sum of diagonal elements of the scaled noise and interference covariance matrix, performing a first spectral shift by the sum to the scaled noise and interference covariance matrix to obtain a first spectral shifted matrix, performing eigenvalue decomposition to the first spectral shifted matrix to obtain an eigenvalue matrix, performing a second spectral shift by the sum to the eigenvalue matrix, limiting the eigenvalue matrix to a diagonal matrix, and obtaining a new noise and interference covariance matrix adding the scaled noise and interference covariance matrix and eigenvalue pairs that are obtained based, at least partly, on the performed eigenvalue decomposition.

Regularization of covariance matrix and eigenvalue decomposition in a MIMO system

According to an aspect, there is provided an apparatus for performing beamforming optimization for a MIMO architecture. The apparatus maintains, in a database, channel state information of a plurality of radio channels comprising first and second order statistics. The apparatus calculates, separately for each of two or more remote radio units using an eigenbeamforming scheme, first sets of beamforming weights based on the second order statistics. Then, the apparatus performs, for each terminal device, single-user MIMO optimization between the two or more remote radio units to maximize a pre-defined metric, being a mutual information metric or signal-to-interference-plus-noise, based on first sets of beamforming weights and the first order statistics. The result, for each terminal device, is a second set of beamforming weights. The apparatus causes transmitting data using beams formed by applying both first and second sets of optimized beamforming weights at the two or more remote radio units.

Method and an apparatus for a transmission scheme

A method and apparatus are disclosed for determining a signal subspace in a communications system. A remote apparatus obtains signal streams from antenna elements or signal streams from antenna beams. Based on the obtained signal streams, the apparatus selects a signal subspace for a user, the signal subspace having a dimension M. Based on the selected signal subspace, the apparatus transmits, via an interface to a central apparatus, M streams of post-fast-Fourier-transform data, the interface being capable of transmitting a different subspace for different frequency bins.

A communication connection is established between a source base station and a mobile relay base station comprising a distributed antenna system (DAS). The DAS includes multiple spatially distributed antenna units (DAUs), wherein at least part of the DAUs are used for forming a cluster of sub-cells within a coverage area of the mobile relay base station and at least part of the DAUs are used for communicating with a fixed cellular network infrastructure over multiple backhaul links. A first backhaul link is then handed over from the source base station to a target base station. After the handover, data transfer between the source base station and at least one backhaul link still linked to the source base station is continued, and remaining backhaul link(s) are released from the source base station according to a determined criterion.
