A method to remove sulfides and other volatile contaminants from liquor vapor condensate in a pulp manufacturing process, where the mentioned liquor vapor condensate is fed into a stripper, which is part of a closed loop system including the stripper, a regenerative thermal oxidization process (RTO) and a SO scrubber, in which loop a gas is circulated, preferably air, and such components formed or stripped off, in this loop whereafter the circulating gas is stripped off sulfides and other volatile components from the liquor vapor condensate, whereafter the gas stream is fed into a RTO process, where the stripped off contaminants are combusted are under formation of SO and thereafter the SO enriched gas is led to a SO scrubber, where preferably alkali is used as absorption medium, and thereafter the circulating gas is returned back into the stripper.

Method of cleaning sulfide contaminated condensates

An evaporation apparatus for evaporation of, for example, spent liquor from pulp cooking. The apparatus has a vertical cylinder that has evaporation surfaces disposed therein. An outlet opening is defined in a widened part of the cylinder to receive driven-off steam. A skirt is disposed in the cylinder and surrounds the evaporated liquid and driven-off steam and has a diameter that is smaller than a diameter of the widened part. The skirt has an open bottom and a skirt opening is defined in a portion of the skirt that is facing away from the outlet opening.

Provided is a process for removing metals from a bleaching plant spent liquor and recovering a chelating agent which includes the steps of: heating a spent liquor containing a chelate comprising metals bound in a chelating agent to a temperature of at least about 140.degree. C. to break bonds in the chelate and release metals from the chelate; increasing the content of at least one of carbonate or sulphide in an alkaline material comprising at least one of green liquor or white liquor to form a carbonate or sulphide enhanced alkaline material; contacting the heated spent liquor with the alkaline material to form a solution containing precipitated metals, wherein the alkaline material is added in an amount sufficient to precipitate a majority of the released metals out of the solution; filtering the solution to separate the precipitated metals from the solution and form a filtrate containing recovered chelating agent; and supplying at least a portion of the recovered chelating agent to a chelating washing stage in a bleaching plant to bond with metals released from pulp and form a chelate.
