A method for selecting a mode of operation for at least two modems is described. First, a handshake procedure is performed in order to determine a set of possible modes of operation supported by said modems. From said set of possible modes of operation, a set of favorable modes of operation is derived. In case there exist two or more favorable modes of operation, a probing-based selection is performed that comprises evaluating respective performances of said favorable modes of operation. The favorable mode of operation with the best performance is selected as a resultant mode of operation.

Probing-based auto moding

In a multiband detector (DET), sub-band reconstruction and distortion compensation is performed by a plurality of digital filters (FIR , . . . , FIRk, . . . , FIRN) arranged in a single-input-multiple-output architecture. Each digital filter (FIRk) is coupled between one and the same input (RDA-I) whereto a distorted multiband signal (si) is applied and a respective output (RDA-Ok) whereto a reconstructed sub-band signal (sik) is applied. This multiband detector (DET) has a uniform architecture for each input-output path and can easily be adapted to changes in distortion of the multiband signal (si), even if these changes only affect a few sub-bands.

Multiband detector

In a multicarrier transmission system, a transmitter (T, T&prime;) sends digital data packets (D) modulated on a set of carriers to a receiver (R, R&prime;). A subset of the carriers constituting the set of carriers has frequencies (f , f , f , f ) in predetermined frequency ranges (Amateur Radio Band) with high risk for being affected by narrowbanded interference (RFI), e.g. originating from radio amateur transmission. The data bits of the digital data packets (D) that are allocated to the subset of carriers having frequencies (f , f , f , f ) within these predetermined frequency ranges (Amateur Radio Band), are allocated thereto in a redundant way. Via an allocation message (AM) communicated between the transmitter (T, T&prime;) and the receiver (R, R&prime;) both are aware of the redundancy in the bit allocations. The receiver (R, R&prime;) is capable of measuring the amount of narrowbanded interference (RFI) that affects each carrier within the subset of carriers that may be affected thereby, and can re-combine data bits allocated to carriers in this subset which carry redundant data bits so that interference immunity is improved.
