The invention relates to a cavity determination apparatus for determining a cavity within an object, in particular, for determining the location and dimensions of a heart chamber within a person without use of electrode contact information. A bendable segment of an introduction element is arranged within the cavity in different arrangements, wherein curves defined by the bendable segment in the different arrangements are determined by a curve determination unit. A cavity reconstruction unit reconstructs the cavity based on the determined curves. Thus, not only single locations within the cavity are acquired and used for reconstructing the cavity, but larger curves. A considerable amount of spatial information can therefore be acquired and used very rapidly. This allows reconstructing the cavity with improved quality in a relatively short time.

Cavity determination apparatus

An OSS animated display system for an interventional device () including an integration of one or more optical shape sensors and one or more interventional tools. The OSS animated display system employs a monitor () and a display controller () for controlling a real-time display on the monitor () of an animation of a spatial positional relationship between the OSS interventional device () and an object (). The medical interventional imaging device includes a temporary data buffer configured to temporarily store medical interventional fluoroscopic image data, a signal processor configured to detect if an abnormal state occurs during an intervention and to record an instant at which the abnormal state has occurred, and a permanent data storage configured to permanently store at least a part of the medical interventional fluoroscopic image data stored temporarily before and/or at the recorded instant if the abnormal state is detected.

Medical interventional imaging device

The present invention relates to image processing for enhancing ultrasound images. In order to provide image data showing the current situation, for example in a region of interest of a patient, an image processing device () for enhancing ultrasound images is provided that comprises an image data input unit (), a central processing unit (), and a display unit (). The image data input unit is configured to provide an ultrasound image of a region of interest of an object, and to provide an X-ray image of the region of interest of the object. The central processing unit is configured to select a predetermined image area in the X-ray image, to register the ultrasound image and the X-ray image, to detect the predetermined area in the ultrasound image based on the registered selected predetermined image area, and to highlight at least a part of the detected area in the ultrasound image to generate a boosted ultrasound image. The display unit is configured to provide the boosted ultrasound image as guiding information on a display area ().

Enhancing ultrasound images

The present invention relates to displaying spatial information of an interventional device in a live 2D X-ray image. In order to provide a facilitated visualization technique to provide 3D information of a subject, a device () for providing spatial information of an interventional device in a live 2D X-ray image is provided. The device comprises an input unit (), and a processing unit (). The input unit is configured to provide an actual 2D X-ray image () of a region of interest related to a portion of a patient's body. A target location () lies within the region of interest. At least a portion () of an interventional device is arranged in the region of interest. The input unit is configured to provide actual 3D ultrasound data of at least a part of the region of interest and at least a portion of an interventional device (). The target location () lies within the region of interest. The processing unit is configured to register the actual 3D ultrasound data to the actual 2D X-ray image. The processing unit is also configured to identify the target location in the 3D ultrasound data, and to determine, based on the actual 3D ultrasound data, a spatial relation between the portion of the interventional device and the target location, to retrieve a distance value in a projection direction of the actual 2D X-ray image from the spatial relation, and, based on the distance value, to generate a graphical representation () indicative of the spatial relation, the graphical representation to be displayed with the actual 2D X-ray image.

Device and a corresponding method for providing spatial information of an interventional device in a live 2D X-ray image

A method for ultrasound image acquisition for tracking an object of interest in ultrasound image information includes receiving X-ray image information and ultrasound image information, determining, before the tracking, a spatial relationship between the X-ray image information and the ultrasound image information, detecting an object of interest in the X-ray image information and steering two-dimensional ultrasound image acquisition such that the object of interest is within an ultrasound image plane.

Integration of ultrasound and x-ray modalities

In cardiac roadmapping, a 'roadmap', which is typically a representation of the vasculature of a patient obtained via previously acquired data from a CT scan, is overlaid on live intervention data, showing the position of an intervention device obtained using fluoroscopy. In this way, the intervention device may be tracked inside a realistic representation of the patient. The accurate registration of the fluoroscopic image to the roadmap data is an important step, otherwise the reported live position of the intervention device would not be shown at an accurate position inside the roadmap. Registration can be performed by the injection of contrast medium. In the case of cardiac roadmapping, the small vessel diameters mean that it is possible to register intervention devices directly. However, the behavior of intervention devices in larger vessels is difficult to predict, and so device-based registration is harder to achieve in such a context. By detecting the presence of a specific intervention device and a specific vascular context, an accurate registration of the intervention device to the 3D roadmap can be provided via comparison to a library of known device configurations.

Image registration

The present invention relates to an medical interventional imaging device () for monitoring an interventional procedure, the medical interventional imaging device () comprising: a temporary data buffer () configured to temporarily store medical interventional fluoroscopic image data; a signal processor () configured to detect if an abnormal state occurs during an intervention and to record an instant at which the abnormal state has occurred; and a permanent data storage () configured to permanently store at least a part of the medical interventional fluoroscopic image data stored temporarily before and/or at the recorded instant if the abnormal state is detected.

A method and device is proposed for automatic detection of an event in which a device is leaving a stable position relative to and within an anatomy. The method comprises the steps of receiving a sequence of fluoroscopic images, detecting a device in at least two of the fluoroscopic images, determining a motion field of the detected device in the sequence of fluoroscopic images, generating a sequence of integrated images by integrating the sequence of fluoroscopic images taking into consideration the motion field, determining a saliency metric based on the integrated images, identifying a landmark in the integrated images based on the saliency metric, and determining as to whether the landmark is moving relative to the device, based on a variation of the saliency metric.

Automatic movement detection

A system () and a corresponding method enable an enhanced roadmapping visualization without unnecessary device-footprints. The system () includes an x-ray imaging device () for acquiring x-ray images and a calculation unit (). The x-ray imaging device () is adapted for acquiring a first x-ray image () with an interventional device () present in the vessels () while no contrast agent is present in the vessels () and a second x-ray image () with the interventional device () present in the vessels () while contrast agent is present in the vessels (). The calculation unit is adapted for creating a roadmap image () by subtracting the first x-ray image () from the second x-ray image () and automatically minimizing the visibility of the interventional device () in the roadmap image (). A display unit () is adapted to display the roadmap image () or an overlay of a current fluoroscopy image () with the roadmap image ().

Automatic device-footprint-free roadmapping for endovascular interventions

A medical image viewing device for navigation in X-ray imaging includes a processor. The processor is configured to perform a 3D-2D registration of a preoperative three-dimensional volume based on geometry parameters of an image data provider, which provides fluoroscopy images of an object of interest and a plurality of structures with interfering motions to be removed, for creating digitally reconstructed radiograph images of these structures for each fluoroscopy image. These are subtracted from the respective fluoroscopy images to generate structure-suppressed fluoroscopy images free from interfering motions. Based on these structure-suppressed fluoroscopy images, an angiographic image sequence is generated performing a motion estimation of the structures.

Suppression of independent movements in a series of 2D X-ray fluoroscopy images using a 3D pre-operative volume

The present invention relates to apparatus for automatic quantification of a part of vascular structure. It is described to provide () at least one first image comprising a spatial representation of a region of interest of a vascular structure, wherein the at least one first image comprises image data representative of a location of a part of a medical device. The medical device is configured to be used in a vascular treatment, and the part of the medical device is configured to be in a plurality of states associated with different phases of the vascular treatment. At least one second image comprising a spatial representation of the region of interest of the vascular structure is provided (), wherein the at least one second image comprises image data representative of at least a part of the vascular structure in a visible and distinct manner. A location of a feature in the spatial representation of the region of interest of the vascular structure of the at least one first image is determined (), wherein the feature is associated with the part of the medical device in one of the states associated with a phase of the vascular treatment. A transform relating at least one location in the at least one first image to a corresponding at least one location in the at least one second image is determined () and applied to the location of the feature in the spatial representation of the region of interest of the vascular structure of the at least one first image to provide a determined location in the spatial representation of the region of interest of the vascular structure of the at least one second image. Data is output () representative of the vascular structure at the determined location.

Apparatus and method of automatic pre and post quantitative coronary angiography for qualifying an outcome of a vascular treatment

A position determination apparatus for determining the position of a working element arranged within an object having an inner structure with respect to a model of the object. The position and shape of a registration element within the inner structure of the object are provided and used for determining a transformation relating the inner structure of the model and the position and shape of the registration element with respect to each other, wherein the position of the working element with respect to the model is determined depending on a provided spatial relation between the working element and the registration element and the determined transformation.

Position determination apparatus

The present invention relates to determining optimal C-arm angulation for heart valve positioning. In order to further improve the workflow in relation with the correct positioning of a valve prosthesis, it is described to provide () a 2D image of an aortic root of a heart of a patient, wherein the 2D image comprises three cusps of the heart in a visible and distinct manner. Further, 2D positions of the three cusps are indicated () in the 2D image. An analytical 3D model of the aortic cusp locations is provided (), and the 3D positions of the three cusps are computed () based on the 2D positions and the analytical 3D model. Still further, an optimal C-arm angulation is computed () based on the computed 3D positions of the cusps, wherein, in the optimal C-arm angulation, the three cusps are aligned in a 2D image. The optimal C-arm angulation is then provided for further image acquisition steps.

Determining C-arm angulation for valve positioning

An apparatus for generating a medical device implantation warning includes a processor to automatically generate a spatial implantation envelope of a first medical device. The envelope defines a spatial extent of a region of implantation around a first medical device prior to, during, and/or after deployment of the first medical device for implantation. If a second medical device, such as a pigtail catheter, strays into the area, an alarm is generated to warn a medical professional to withdraw the pigtail catheter, before deployment continues.
