A shifter for the transmission of a vehicle is described. The shifter has a shift lever operatively connected to the transmission. A rotatable shaft is connected to the lever. A lateral movement device is operatively connected to the shaft. A cable pin is positioned on the lateral movement device and connected to the shift mechanism for the transmission.

Transmission shifter system

An adjustable steering column () that is designed to absorb energy by collapsing is described. The steering column () has a jacket body () secured to the vehicle and a steering shaft assembly () adjustably and slidably positioned in the jacket body (). An energy absorbing strap () has a second end () secured to the jacket body () and a first end () releasably secured to the steering shaft assembly (). The energy absorbing strap () being disposed to deform to absorb energy when the steering shaft assembly () is displaced with respect to the jacket body (). The energy absorbing strap () is deformed at a second predetermined energy absorbing rate. A spring plate () has its first end () secured to the jacket body () and a second end () releasably engaging the energy absorbing strap (). At least one elongated slot () is positioned adjacent the first end () of the spring plate (). A securing device () is positioned in the at least one slot () to secure the spring plate () to the jacket body (). The securing device () secures the spring plate () to the jacket body () at a first energy absorbing rate. The first energy absorbing rate being lower than the second energy absorbing rate.

Low initial resistance steering column crash apparatus

The invention is directed to a lock for an adjustable steering column. The lock has a first member having at least one tooth disposed in a first direction. The lock has a second member having at least one tooth disposed in a second direction. A moveable locking device having a first recess disposed to engage at least one tooth on the first member and a second recess positioned to engage the at least one tooth on the second member. A releasable clamping device is positioned to be moved into and away from an engagement position with the first and second members. The first recess restricting movement in the first direction and the second recess restricting movement in the second direction when the moveable locking device is engaged with the first and second members.

Adjustable steering column lock

In order to provide a fail-safe operating mode during a transition between an autonomous steering mode and a driver-controlled steering mode in an emergency situation, a steering system comprises a steering shaft, a brake mechanism movable between an released position and a engaged position for angularly locking the steering shaft, and an override such that a non-destructive external torque applied to the steering shaft above a given threshold when the brake mechanism is in the engaged position results in a rotation of the steering shaft.
