Disclosed herein is a chemical vapor infiltration method including flowing ceramic precursors through a preform and depositing a matrix material on the preform at a first gas infiltration pressure, increasing the gas filtration pressure to a second gas infiltration pressure, and lowering the gas infiltration pressure to a third gas infiltration pressure which is intermediate to the first and second gas infiltration pressures.

CVI matrix densification process

An article includes a ceramic matrix composite article including ceramic-based reinforcements disposed in a ceramic-based matrix and a barrier layer present at least in part within bounds of the ceramic-based matrix of the ceramic matrix composite article. A method of applying a barrier layer to an article is also disclosed.

Composite component with environmental protection

A method for making a ceramic matrix composite component includes densifying a fibrous preform of the component with a ceramic matrix to form an intermediate component; infiltrating a hole in the intermediate component with an infiltrate material comprising a solid and a metallic alloy whose reaction forms a carbide, silicide, boride or combination thereof, heating the infiltrate material to a temperature in excess of a melting point of the metallic alloy; and sequentially cooling regions of the hole starting from an interior end of the hole to the outer surface of the intermediate component to form a solidified through-thickness reinforcement element. The hole extends in a through-thickness direction and is open to an exterior surface of the intermediate component.

Through thickness reinforcement

A method of manufacturing ceramic matrix composites includes producing chemical vapor deposition functionalized ceramic particles before injecting the functionalized ceramic particles into the CMC fabric. The functionalized ceramic particles are mixed with a binder solution and then dispensed into voids present between adjacent tows of the CMC fabric. Injecting the particles in the center of the voids reduces the size and volume fraction of the voids/defects, improving the homogeneity of surface texture, homogeneity of microstructure, and part model shape conformity.

CVD functionalized particles for CMC applications

A method of repairing an article including cleaning a repair area, wherein the repair area comprises a ceramic matrix composite; and depositing a ceramic material in the cleaned repair area using laser assisted chemical vapor deposition. Also disclosed is a repaired ceramic composite produced by this method.

Method of repairing ceramic composite articles

A fixture for processing a ceramic matrix composite article includes first and second tool segments that each have an exterior side and an interior side. The interior side has a border mate face, and the interior side of the first tool segment faces the interior side of the second tool segment such that the border mate faces align and circumscribe a working region for holding a fiber preform that is to be coated with a ceramic material. The tool segments each having an array of through-holes that open to the working region to permit inflow of gaseous precursor into the working region. A seal circumscribes the working region and blocks a gap between the border mate faces to limit inflow of the gaseous precursor through the gap into the working region.

A method of forming a coating includes providing a mold that has a flexible wall that defines a mold cavity, inserting a component that is to be coated into the mold cavity, the component having a component surface roughness and there being a coating gap defined between the component and the flexible wall of the mold cavity, introducing a molding slurry into the mold cavity, the molding slurry filling the coating gap and contacting the component so as to overcoat the component surface roughness, solidifying the molding slurry to form a green coating on the component, and consolidating the green coating to form a final coating on the component, the final coating having a coating surface roughness that is less than the component surface roughness.

High temperature composite materials with erosion resistant seal coat

Disclosed is a method for making a ceramic matrix composite. The method includes infiltrating an initial ceramic matrix composite with a molten silicon infiltration material to form a silicon infiltrated composite; cooling the silicon infiltrated composite; heating a first portion of the cooled silicon infiltrated composite to a temperature in excess of the melt temperature of the silicon infiltration material in the presence of a carbon source; heating a second portion of the cooled silicon infiltrated composite to a temperature in excess of the melt temperature of the silicon infiltration material in the presence of a carbon source after heating the first portion; and cooling the heated portions to form a final ceramic matrix composite, wherein the first portion and second portion of the cooled silicon infiltrated composite are adjacent or overlap.

Method to produce dense ceramic matrix composites

A method of spreading fiber tows includes applying a coupling medium to a surface of a fibrous structure, positioning an ultrasonic probe adjacent to the surface of a fibrous structure, such that a tip of the ultrasonic probe is in contact with the coupling medium, moving at least one of the ultrasonic probe and the fabric structure relative to the other of the ultrasonic probe and the fibrous structure according to a first pattern, and imparting ultrasonic vibration with the ultrasonic probe to the surface of the fibrous structure while moving the ultrasonic probe along the surface of the fibrous structure. Imparting ultrasonic vibration to the surface of the fibrous structure spreads tows of the fibrous structure.

Fabric structure control using ultrasonic probe

A method for forming a ceramic matrix composite component includes forming a fibrous preform of the component with a plurality of fiber layers and a fill region disposed between one or more of the plurality of fiber layers. Ceramic particles are provided in the fill region, which is densified using chemical vapor infiltration.

Particle based inserts for CMC

An article includes a ceramic-based substrate and a barrier layer on the ceramic-based substrate. The barrier layer includes a matrix, diffusive particles, and gettering particles. The gettering particles include at least one of non-gas-evolving particles and porous particles. An article and a method are also disclosed.

Environmental barrier coating

A ceramic matrix composite includes a plurality of ceramic fibers and an interface coating disposed on the plurality of ceramic fibers. The interface coating includes a carbon-based layer disposed on each ceramic fiber of the plurality of ceramic fibers and a boron-nitride based layer disposed on the first carbon-based layer. The ceramic matrix composite also includes a ceramic matrix surrounding the plurality of ceramic fibers. A ceramic matrix composite and a method of forming a ceramic matrix composite component are also disclosed.

Ceramic component

A ceramic matrix composite includes a ceramic matrix, fibers embedded in the ceramic matrix, and an interfacial coating system on each of the fibers. The interfacial coating system includes alternating layers of boron nitride layers of individual thicknesses of about 50 nanometers to 200 nanometers and carbon layers of individual thicknesses of less than 5 nanometers.
